To naturally induce or not....

Ok, so here's the skinny ladies....

The baby has a reasonable amount of amneotic fluid left, not a ton, but adequate for where I'm at (I'll be 41 weeks tomorrow). Baby's heartrate and movements are great (via NST). I'm 1cm dialated and 50% effaced. Baby is low in the birth canal. Finally, some positive signs that I will birth her eventually, LMAO! The midwife at the OB's office was great, she offered to sweep my membranes if I wanted her to but was completely okay with not doing it. She told me I could go longer than 42 weeks but they don't like to see it since it can increase chances of a stillborn - but as long as I'm informed, they're open to it.

Still, the thought of being induced is scary so I'll have nothing to do with it.

I talked to my naturopath and she was great (per usual). She said it sounded like my body was pretty much ready to go and that if I wanted to give things a jump start she'd recommend a variety of natural remedies to get the ball rolling.

Her method to "naturally" induce (since really the only natural way is to let your body do it on its own) is to cook up 2oz of castor oil in an egg (the castor oil bound to the protein prevents the explosive diarreah while contracting the uterus) and then, after 2 hours, a combination of blue and black cohosh tinctures and homeopathic pellets. She said it's only not worked for one person but she wasn't expecting it to work for her. Both her children were naturally induced with castor oil and only her first required the herbal remedies.

Part of me says I'd love to start the herbal remedies to make things more convenient, the other part says to wait to see when she comes out on her own. It would be so much better for those coming to visit in the hospital to come on the weekend - parents and inlaws mostly since they'll be coming from out of town. But that's no real reason to do this. But it would be so great to know I've had a good night sleep and be mentally prepared...ooooh the agony!!!! What would you do??

I can see being open to something like the cohoshes but I would avoid castor oil. Oh man, is that nasty stuff.

I would put off stripping until the last minute if you can.

It's your call, I mean, with natural induction nothing will happen if it's not time, although sometimes you might get some ctx and such with the method and then it will peter out. It's your call, I think it's awesome that your care providers are open to a post-dates baby!!

I'm just over 40 weeks and 4cm and will be induced next Tuesday if my Little One hasn't arrived by then. My Midwife told me to go home and eat spicy foods, take a long walk...or several long walks and have sex.

you asked what i would do, and i would wait, but that's just me. i would definitely consider the castor oil/egg thing or the cohoshes after 42 weeks.

it's such a personal decision. like, i really would like to have a feb babe in my life soon. so, non-invasive natural induction stuff like nipple stimulation/nursing a toddler a little more often, lots of walking, sex, etc... all sound great to me.

i think castor oil and cohoshes take it to the next step. but it's what a lot of people would do and are comfy with. i have encouraged people to consider these things to help along labor. i don't think there's much wrong with it if you are okay with it personally and the other stuff isn't doing the work for ya.

just seek peace. and, trust what brings you peace as the right decision for you.

I think I would put off anything that strong a little bit longer too...til closer to 42 weeks. In the meantime though, I'd be doing all the other things...nipple stimulation, various foods, walking, sex, etc.

Thanks for the perspectives Ladies one of the things that helps me make a decision is seeing how other people look at things - some I'll agree with, some I won't but most of them I haven't even considered.

I'm trying to decide what I'm comfortable with so don't be shy.

right now i'm walking (as much as I can around my dinky apartment ) nursing Jake as much as I can stand, trying sex but with dh stayin up so dang late by the time he wakes up he has just enough time to get ready for work and leave...I've also had a crazy craving for mexican style totinos frozen pizzas

so far no luck. took a break the last couple days to feel better but now i'm going STIR crazy.

oh also...I had my membranes stripped a bit at my last appt. it didn't do anything but it could have. I am thinking about requesting it again at my appointment on monday. I probably won't though if anyone mentions induction that will be what I request to try first.

Go to the Chiropractor!! I was 41 weeks with my first and went into labor about 7 hours after my visit to the chiropractor. I also used a homeopathic remedy of black and blue kohoshes.

I would try it.......Don't stress too much though.......it's perfectly normal for longer "cooking times". Try some visualizations too~

It will happen any day now!!! Hang in there~

OK, several thoughts. I have used castor oil successfully once (twice, if you count the time that I binned the bottle instead of drinking it) and it's failed dismally for me twice. One of those times, I took a 2oz dose.Nada. Zip- and I have to say that I'm not convinced that putting a quadruple dose of castor oil in a scrambled egg is going to make it any more stomachable or stop the diarrhoea. You NEED the diarrhoea. That's the point, it's how it works. There's a lot of people who have found a standard 5ml dose effective, though.
I don't rate the cohoshes. I've only used them during pregnancy once, took a dose the night before River was born and this labour was significantly different fron my others, with contractions back-to-back AND- this was the kicker for me- I didn't get to go drifting off to labourland. Now I don't know if that's just par for the course with a fast labour or if it WAS the cohoshes, but for a first birth I'd want my standard slow-and-gentle ones back.
I am very conscious of the fact that your emotions are very mobile now, and I think that if you can bring yourself back to peace with yourself, that will leave you in a better place to birth this baby. I'd suggest you check out the indicators for prescribing gelsemium or pulsatilla homoeopathic remedies in particular and see if either of those strike a chord with you.
