nak

keep your nipples out in the air to dry

change the nursing position so if babies mouth is at 2 and 8 (think clock) change to 10 and 4

make sure your latch is good. i have one side thats sore, but if the latch is right it only hurts for about 30 sec and then it's fine unless he shifts his mouth. don't be afraid to relatch!

make sure if you need to break the latch that you stick your finger in and break the suction first...otherwise you can do some serious nipple damage

as for the engorgement...take a nice hot shower and hand express a little to relieve the excess...i've also heard that cold cabbage leaves help alleviate engorgement and pain

gl!

sarah lynne gave reat advice! definately air dry your nipples, that was huge for me. changing positions helps a lot too. you could try pumping a little to help with engorgement but hand expressing is usually enough. good luck, just remember it gets better soon, i'm at 2 weeks now and i can tell a huge difference from a couple days ago.

Hang on there. My nipples healed after my engorgement eased. I pumped to help get rid of the extra and lanolin made me feel better. The hot shower is a good idea but keep it on the short side as too much heat can actually end up making things worse. It gets much better promise!

My midwife wrote me a prescription for Newman's Nipple Cream - it is WONDERFUL.

Changing positions, football hold worked well for me to mix it up with nursing while laying down and sitting normal. I also put lanolin on after every time she nursed, my post partum doula thought it was excessive, but I wasn't chapped. I used cabbage leaves when I weaned my daughter and they seemed to help. Oh, I also pumped at first before I got engorged, like maybe on the 4th or 5th day I started pumping in between a feeding.
