last night my son asked me to play a game with him. this is a big deal to me. i have long been an advocate of just letting kids be themselves so it came as quite a shock to me when i found myself mothering a child who challenged this notion. i still stick to it but it was hard to figure out where he needed help and where i ought to recognize his right to be just as quirky as his mommy. he's got a sever speech delay and i guess i kind of put it out of my mind that he's so different because he's all i know of children that age, up close anyway. he was just him. for the last year or so i'd had these crying jags where i told my husband how sad it made me that DS had never asked to play a game with me. yeah, i know it's needy. i'm a 26 yo woman who feels rejected by a 4yo.
so anyway the other day i got him a tub of beans and put polished stones in it to find. he LOVED it. the next day when DH went to pick him up from school he said that ivy had told him he was going home to "play a game with mommy" he even said a whole sentence when requesting black beans instead of red.
my joy was further increased when i heard he'd gotten into the car after school asking to play when he got home. HE MADE A PLAN INVOLVING OTHER PEOPLE AND A SOCIAL ACTIVITY!!!!!! and it involved me
no offense to those who are not overly social. i don't make that many demands upon him as far as interaction but it really is a happy day for me when he asks to spend a little time with me. i spend so much time trying to speak his language and he's beginning to try and understand mine
