Oh dear - thrush...

I finally talked to a LLL leader on Friday about the severe pain I've been having in my nipples; after looking at my nipples and my DD's mouth, we figured out that it's thrush.

I can't get in to the doctor til Monday at the earliest for nystatin, and the last time we had thrush, the doctor freaking ARGUED with me about whether it was communicable between mother and child!!!

So I guess we'll be eating tons of yogurt this weekend. Oh this sucks - I hope we can get it cleared up before the baby's born.

try acidophilus pills ( yogurt pills ) they worked on me when I had thrush and was nursing- it helped my daughter also who was the nursee.

My wife has had REALLY good experience using grapefruit seed extract to treat thrush. We use Dr Jay Gordon's protocol that you can find here: http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp You can find GSE at health food stores. Jesse usually starts to get relief within a day or 2.

I battled thrush at the beginning of this pregnancy a LOT. Wiping my nipples with vinegar before and after each nursing gave me a ton of relief--much more than the nystatin (of course, though, I did use the nystatin in DS's mouth--but even when I was away from home and didn't have the nystatin for him, I got relief w/vinegar). hth! thrush sucks!!!

Ow. I'm sorry. We've never had it here, so I can't offer advice, just sympathy. I hope you both get better SOON!

Acidophulous is a must. I also have used grapefruit seed extract. The vinegar works amazingly. I keep a small bottle of vinegar in the bathroom for my nipples. It's diluted 10 parts water to one part vinegar. Don't use it immediatly before nursing though as the baby might not like the taste of your nipple. Add some vinegar to wash loads to kill any yeast on your clothing and the baby's. Only use your bath towel once and wash them with vinegar. Wash the things that the baby puts in her mouth with it too. Nystatin disn't work for us. Hopefully it will for you. We had thrush wicked bad for over 2 years.

Where in Germany can I get acidophulous pills?

We had thrush once before, the nystatin worked really well.

I will use the vinegar though!

I had thrush so bad with dd1 and grapefruit seed extract worked wonders! And I tried genetian violet and nystatin and neither worked. With GSE, it was gone a a couple days. You should seriously try it

Crappy crappy crappy!!!

None of the doctors at our clinic will write a prescription for nystatin without examining me and/or DD, and there are no appointments available for TEN DAYS!!!!

I do have an OB appointment tomorrow (different base, different clinic!) but it's with the doctor who told me 2 weeks ago that she didn't have time to discuss my concerns with me, so I doubt she'll take 30 seconds out of her day to confirm the diagnosis and write a prescription.

But, the pediatric clinic is right across the hall from the OB clinic, so I think I will have my DH walk my DD over there and have them confirm the diagnosis while I'm at my OB appointment.

If that doesn't work, the LC is in the same building, so I'll see if she can take care of it.

If THAT doesn't work, I'll go to the ER and insist someone let me show them my boobs!!!

Grrrr.

Apparently the ped clinic across the hall from the OB clinic is just as booked as the clinic at our base, AND the LC is no longer there!!!

I asked the tech wtf I was supposed to do about an infection if I couldn't get an appointment to see a doctor, and was told to go to the ER. So, that's what I'll be doing...but man am I ticked about this. What if she had pneumonia or something serious????? And I can't get an appointment for TEN DAYS ANYWHERE?

can you go to a local health food store for the grape seed extract and acidophilus? I had decent luck with that purple stuff, drawing a blank on what its called.

I wouldn't know a health food store if it slapped me in the face, unfortunately, since it's all German.

Sorry the base clinics are giving you the run-around again I hope they can help you out in the ER!

So I was finally able to get treatment for the thrush, but am encountering another problem, maybe? I don't know...

DD's thrush is completely cleared up. Doctor told me to keep giving her the drops til she's had the whole bottle, and then be done with it.

My nipple pain, however, has seen no change. I'm using the cream 3x daily, as directed, and using lansinoh in between, but even just casual touches, like nipples against my shirt, are enough to cause severe pain. The cream is almost completely gone...should I ask for another tube of it at my next appointment tomorrow, or should I try some other kind of treatment? Is it possible that my pain is NOT being caused by thrush?

Try applying vinegar too. It works REALLY WELL on thrush.

It is possible that your nipple pain is being caused by something else. Your DD might not have the best of latch. Does your nipple come out of her mouth looking like a tube of lipstick? Also, our blood supply in our breasts is increasing a bit, so they can be more sensative because of that. I had a bout recently where I was experiencing major nipple pain, especially while nursing and my LLL leader and I decided it was probably caused by that. I have my LLL meeting tonight so I will talk about it again because one of our leaders recently became an LC. She might know more.

DD is all but weaned at this point. She hasn't asked to nurse in just over a week, and when I offered the other day, she said no. I'm waiting til she sees the baby nurse before I declare her officially weaned.

I will keep using the cream, and I'll use vinegar too, and hope for the best.
