Do you ever use margarine?

Growing up, my mom always used it. I haven't bought margarine in many years. I prefer butter, and I buy organic butter. It is very expensive. I am considering buying margarine again to use in cookies, mac & cheese, etc. We will still use butter for anything where you can taste it, like on pancakes, toast, biscuits, etc. I am trying to cut down our grocery bill which (I think) has gotten out of control.

What do y'all think? Is it so evil? Is there a kind that's better than others?

We use Earth Balance.

:Puke

I hate margarine. My mom always used it growing up, and WAAAAAY before I knew much about it, I was suspicious of that fake butter. Real butter was a luxury item available in our house only during christmas time when mom made homemade candy... I vowed then to always have the luxury of real butter when I had my own household...

I only use real, organic butter. And it's tasty!

Oh, and if you have a Costco membership, you can get 2 lbs of organic butter for the price you'd get just one in a regular grocery store!

I don't like the taste of margarine, and I LOVE butter : All my grandmother's recipes call for "oleo" though, it always makes me laugh.

Isn't margarine high in trans fats? I don't know much about it (never had it growing up and don' t buy it now), but it seems to make a liquid vegetable oil stay solid it would have to have some trans fats? I guess then you'd have to pick between conventional butter and all that goes with that, or margarine and trans fats.

Sorry I'm not much help!

Earth Balance has no trans fats and it actually taste really good. It's also vegan.

I know. I love the taste. That's why I'm saying we would continue to use it where you can "taste" it, but sub margarine when I make banana bread, or cookies, or whatever.

Oh how I miss Costco!! We had a membership when we lived in Colorado but there is no Costco anywhere near me now. And I won't shop at Sam's Club.:

How much is it? Where I live, a pound of butter is about $4, organic butter is about $5, a pound of magarine is less than $1 (Imperial brand, I think).

It's a $1.99 a tub(1lb) where we buy it (they also make sticks though). I wouldn't buy margarine with trans fats though no matter how cheap.

I've heard that margarine is just a molecule or two away from plastic. Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

Honestly, I think baked goods taste a zillion times better with butter than margarine. We use Earth Balance as well and its not real expensive.

We only use organic butter. We did try Earth Balance, are tried REALLY REALLY hard to like it, but it just can't compare to butter. There is no way I'd use margarine - the taste alone is enough to turn me off.

Ew.

Sigh. I want it to be OK. I'm trying to trim my budget. You people aren't helping.

We use Earth Balance, at $2.50 per 16 oz tub or sticks.

I prefer butter, but DS has a milk allergy, so it's the next best option.

Margarin is SO unhealthy and manipulated.

Try the Earth Balance, but if buttery taste is really important to you, keep in minD THAT YOU REALLY CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE WHEN MARGARINE IS USED IN BAKED GOODS (MOST, ANYWAY- COOKIES DEFINITELY!)

Caps lock! Whoops!

No margarine here. Though often our butter isn't organic

Never. Never, never, never!

I'm glad healthier-than-margarine products like Earth Balance are out there for folks with dairy allergies.

But aside from that? I don't care how "healthy" any butter substitute might be. It ain't butter.

Is there another area you can trim your budget?

I only use margarine when I make xmas cookies for the rest of the family and I need 4 lbs of butter/margarine.

btw for mac and cheese, try subbing plain yogurt in place of butter, it's really good

I never use margarine. I consider it a 'fake food' .

I generally buy organic butter (preferably cultured) but I'd use non organic butter before margarine any day!

Trader Joe's also has decent prices for butter.
