Did you knit the rest of the hat on size 9 circular? If so, you can magic loop the rest of the hat. Otherwise, I would probably try out the size 8 DPNs, but you may wish to put in a lifeline first in case it doesn't work out.

If your circ is pretty short though, it may not work (I usually magic loop on a 32" circ). In that case, you could probably just pull out one loop instead of two. Its a little more fiddly, but would probably work.
