I'm making le slouche. i've just now realized that i don't have the size 9 DPN that are required to finish the hat. i'm almost ready to start decreasing, and now i'm freaking out! i do have size 8 dpns. do you think that if i knit loosely, i can pull it off, or do i need to spend money that i don't have right now on some size 9 dpns? it's freezing here and i really need a winter hat!

thank you so much in advanced!

Did you knit the rest of the hat on size 9 circular? If so, you can magic loop the rest of the hat. Otherwise, I would probably try out the size 8 DPNs, but you may wish to put in a lifeline first in case it doesn't work out.

To learn magic loop: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques and scroll down, its under small diameter circular knitting. If your circ is pretty short though, it may not work (I usually magic loop on a 32" circ). In that case, you could probably just pull out one loop instead of two. Its a little more fiddly, but would probably work.

Hope that helps.

That's what I was going to say, too... if you have a long enough circular size 9, do Magic Loop. But honestly I wouldn't have a problem using the 8s if that's all I had... just be prepared that you may need to do an extra round or two.

I would have gone for it with the 8's. I love love love magic loop though and haven't looked back since I started.

I do miss the "WOW" factor with using DPNs in public... that was always so impressive to folks! LOL!

well, ladies, i decided to finish it with the size 8 DPNs. unfortunately, i only have the denise interchangeables, which is definitely not flexible enough for magic loop. i will learn it one day though. you can see it finished, if you like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/llobstertv

thank you all!
