One Month TV-Free Anniversary

Yeah for us! It can be done.

Now, my dd was not very hard core. She had been viewing TV only since she was 2 years 4 or 5 months (so, precisely one year). Her viewing was strictly monitored. BUT it had come to the point where she was asking for it first thing in the morning and the minute we would get home from a errand.

My philosophy had been that I needed to fill this desire of hers so that I wouldn't create in her any kinds of frustration that she would remember later (kind of a Buddhist philosophy). So I did attempt to wean her off it gradually, and she actually seemed to be taking the lead with that, never finishing a show anymore, watching for only a few minutes then turning off, etc.

It seemed like we were getting nothing from it.

So I unplugged it and put it down on the floor. She hasn't asked it for ONE time since I did that...not ONCE!

I thought it would be hard to fill the time, but it's been great! She finds plenty to do on her own!

This morning she woke up at 8 and I just was not ready to get up; mosquitoes had bothered me most of the night, my back had hurt, etc. I SO wanted to turn that thing on! But I didn't and we took a long bath together instead!

I guess I want to inspire other mamas to do it - that's why I'm writing this.

Way to go, I'm so proud of you! It just gets easier to fill the time, both you and your daughter will get more creative with your ideas. And you will notice a new independance as she learns to fill her time differently when she gets 'bored'
