Ew, ew, ew!! Kids' humidifier!!

It took me a long time to finally find a humidifier that could be completely disassembled to be cleaned easily. It has a big water tank that sits on top and a huge, replaceable paper filter inside. I felt so good about this humidifier; and they sleep so much better with it. Tonight, when the kids were getting into bed, I picked up the tank to refill it and... get ready for this nastiness... there were TWO disgusting ROACHES on the filter!!! Ugh!! retch, retch, retch... So, is it the water that's attracting them? These are the nasty, wingless kind; not "waterbugs" which we also have here in SC. What can I do to discourage them from going in the humidifier that won't ruin it? I haven't seen any roaches in this house since we've lived here (2 years), but now I feel like I need to armor my whole house!! ew. ew. ew. In case you can't tell, I HATE roaches. yuck. LOL

No one? I would like to bring the humidifier in off the front porch tonight, but I need to know what I can do to keep the bugs OUT!
