projectile vomiting- is this normal?

Our beautiful (still unnamed baby) girl has been projectile vomiting- she seems to be fine, growing and otherwise healthy- but is this normal? She started about four days ago- once a day and then yesterday twice. We don't have a ped and I really don't want to take her to a doc and a waiting room full of sick children in the middle of winter but I am concerned. She is 13days old today...any thoughts from experienced mamas?

Thanks for the support,
Mj

Not in your DDC, but saw your title and thought of my DH. He had pyloric stenosis as an infant and had surgery around 6 weeks to correct it. It is most common in infant boys, but I was told it has alos occured in an occasional girl. I would look inot your family history, it's hereditary.

Or, maybe reflux? The projectile part is what got me. Is it really projecting...like furhter than down the front of her? DH would actually projectile vomit and it would go several feet...sorry for the early morning TMI.

Hoping it's something simple...

Depending on her due date the timing is right for pyloric stenosis so depending on what you're seeing and if it is indeed projectile (as opposed to just spitting up/reflux) I would be concerned honestly. It's more common in first born males but girls can have it. Projectile would be shooting out. Maybe read this and see if it sounds right. http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/med..._stenosis.html

I see I posted at the same time as the above poster. She's right; I forgot it is often hereditary. I hope it is just reflux.

my ds had this when he was first born ~ I had an overactive letdown, and because I would bf on one side for 10 min, then switch he was only getting the 'gassy' milk. He would then vomit all over. I also noticed green specks (like bits of broccoli) in his poo, our mw said that this was a sign that I had an overactive letdown. So, hopefully it's just that for you -- it's pretty easy to fix -- I would only bf on one side for as many 'feeds' as he needed in a four hour period. When I started doing this the vomiting stopped and he was able to get that great hind milk.
Just a thought.
Hope it all works out!

I second the thought about overactive letdown - I had the same thing plus a crazy oversupply with DS1. Eventually the projectile vomiting went away. It was just crazy though how much he would puke and how it went all over. I would literally end up coated in vomit. Fun, LOL. DS1 would chug and chug trying to keep up with my letdown, and would nurse a lot since the foremilk wasn't satisfying his hunger enough, so then his poor stomach would revolt and back it would all come.

I have been much smarter this time about keeping DS2 upright for feeding and for a while afterwards, and trying to use just one breast at a time for a few hours. Have not had problems this time. It's worth a try at least, the tests to diagnose pyloric stenosis are no fun (according to DS1's ped at the time). Is she having green poops? That is definitely a strong sign of too much foremilk.

Tests to diagnosis it weren't a big deal here. I guess for an older child it might be scary for them just being there but not a baby/young child. I hope it is let down.

Also not in your DDC. DD1 started projectile vomiting (surprisingly far for such a tiny thing) everytime she ate, less than a week after birth. She was diagnosed with reflux, but she also had other symptoms of discomfort...like screaming when she laid flat. We did have to use meds to keep food down and she did outgrow it at 4-5 months.

Not sure what you describe sounds the same. Our DD had an immature sphincter that did not close above the stomach which resolved as she grew.
