Cloth Diaper Issues

What the heck am I doing wrong???? I've been using a mix of kissaluvs with bummi's covers and bum genius, but am having problems with leaks. I change Eli every 2-3 hours, depending on how long he has slept. Quite often he leaks out the top when he is sleeping. He's a side sleeper so it's usually out the side he's laying on. I got so frustrated the other day I bought some diaper at Target and having been using those. At least they are cholrine free, etc... Am I not getting the diaper snug enough at the top or do I need to double up on something?? Is learning to cloth diaper just trial and error??

I just dont think kissaluvs are absorbent enough for overnight..never have been for us either

Do you have a doubler for long stretches? I usually used a bigger diaper for nighttime, not Kissaluv 0's. Especially now that your LO is almost 4 weeks old, they won't be enough. Are you making sure to point his penis down when you close the diaper? I'd try a size small diaper for nighttime with, a doubler if needed. I also find wool covers great for preventing nighttime leaks, since they themselves absorb a little bit of overflow.

I prefer to use a different style of cover at night. One that isn't just straight across the front like the bummis are. I also just prefolds at night. I like thirsties covers.

Yes, the first time you use cloth it is trial and error. Every baby is different!

Good luck! Leaks are NOT fun.

I have only been using the kissaluvs during the day. They were the first to leak at night. My husband suggested I point the penis down. I looked at him and asked (quite seriously) is that how it sits in guys underwear?? He laughed and said yes but after awhile gravity takes care of that for you. I told him I didn't know, I don't have one. I'll try that and then see if I still need to add a doubler to the bum genius.

Gotta ask, what's leaking? Poo or wee? I find that bummis covers wick (not leak) for us too, but they're also not a good fit on my chunky babies and towards the top of the size range we were getting leaks.
I AM loving Thirsties wraps, though. (I just saw Rachel said that too. seriously. we're right.) I aloso like terry towelling on newborns because the loops catch the poo and slow down leaks.

Flapjack- it would be wee that is leaking. Hopefully the penis pointing down will help us. I have so much to learn about boys

OH YES!!!! Pointing that penis down is one the most important steps in boy diapering, whether it be cloth or disposable. That should help you a lot.

lol yes, pointing the penis down should help. We're having our own issues with a boy at our house. Also, with my daughter I never had newborn covers and I just changed her clothes every time. NO WONDER I WAS CRAZY!!

oh-- and the first time I was told that you have to push the penis down was in reference to potty training boys and aim. Apparently it's still an issue then!! boys.....
