If you find one let us all know!
Unfortunately, the only groups I know of that are not HSAP are Christian groups. There are yahoo groups with non religious homeschoolers in this area but I don't think they get together on any kind of regular basis. I suppose we should start planning some things and hopefully people will start coming.
Any ideas?
I'd be up for a pumpkin farm tour.
My kids are 3,7,9.

We live in between IC and CR and probably wouldn't do any kind of HSAP (our district doesn't have one and don't want to open enroll somewhere else.) We would be looking for a secular type group with field trips and park days and such.

Thanks!

Really? I would have thought there would be something around here. Well I haven't pulled the older two out of school yet...still (over) thinking the whole thing, but would love to meet up for a pumpkin patch if you are interested. If we do it in the afternoon, I would have my 2.5 yo and my 5 year old(he is only half day).

Where are you located? Do you know of any good pumpkin patches in the area?

Anyone else interested?

I was surprised as well about the lack of independent groups but I've found that most people belong to a HSAP or are pretty conservative compared to us.

We aren't far from you-we're in Springville but out in the country.
Knight's farm is supposed to be a good one by Whittier but I've never been there.
Anyone else know of some good pumpkin patches in the CR area?

ICHEN is secular , Ann. I mean there are people in the group whom I suppose are Christian but we don't talk about that kind of stuff at all. There are also atheists, pagans and everything in between.

The core group of us that get together regularly are liberals. On Monday afternoons we do floor hockey at Mercer/Scanlon. ( Not everyone plays field hockey the younger kids run around the gym or the playground if the weather is nice.)

Tuesdays we have a chess club that meets at the Coralville library. (ETA Keiko organized that club Ann. You should try to make it down sometime, we would love to see you.)

Wednesday afternoons we have a get together for the younger kids at the Iowa City Public Library because the older kids belong to the ICHSAP and the Tweens group meets then.

We do potlucks, parties, and field trips. It isn't uber organized but there is a solid group of us.

I am so incredibly annoyed at the stuff Ds keeps bringing home from school and the loss of skills he has a year ago... HSing is gaining appeal, but it would mean a major revamping of our schedules... I'd have to convince dh first.

Careful you or the Friday craft date will be listed on the ICHEN list. LOL

It almost is anyway... We are starting to schedule stuff around it.

Oh that's great to hear! I thought ICHEN was just a yahoo group, I guess I didn't realize you got together.
I'll be in touch!

La Leche League-Cedar Rapids area
Meeting this Friday-Oct 17 at 10am at the Marion Public library.
This is an informal meeting to discuss any breastfeeding/natural parenting topics that you'd like to discuss. There is a mix of ages from infants to preschoolers (+ a few older homeschooled kids) so feel free to bring any age child.
We meet in the conference room so there's a good amt of room to play.
Hope to see you there!
Ann

Our regular meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at BabyMatters in CR.

PM me if you need more info.

Pictures

We have decided to have our family pictures taken. We haven't had them done since I moved here. Most photographers in CR want enormous sitting fees and require minimum purchases in the $$$ range. So our choices are Walmart, JCPenny, and The Picture People.

Anyone have experiences with any of these places? Ive heard that The Picture People aren't very good, but no one I know can really confirm that. Then there's Walmart. I wonder if they can take decent pictures of kids in such a small place and tons of noise and distractions.

I just want some halfway decent family photos done that aren't gonna cost an arm and a leg. Any thoughts on the matter?

We got our family pictures taken at Sears and they did a great job. http://photo.xanga.com/photosmain.as...rw&uni-47-pg=3 There are more pics on page 4 too.

I sometimes get coupons for them. They also have online ordering - usually we just "share" the pictures on the Sears site with dh's parents and they order what they want. Last time we got the CD with the pictures on it (they finally made the quality of the pics on the CD decent for actually printing on your own) and a package. We got all the pics taken in less than 25 minutes, but didn't feel rushed. At the online site you can also order coffee mugs/key chains/etc with the picture of your choice on it.

For a very reasonable price and beautiful results
we had ours taken with Kim at http://www.lifes-moments.com/#
her sitting fee is $50 and then you order a la carte. We took ours outside and I'm super happy. You will also have the pictures on-line in an album, which is great for long distance relatives.

Does anyone know any pediatric dentists, ENTs, or doctors that clip a tongue tie in CR? I'd like to be able to walk into the pediatrician's office Monday with a few names that I'd like her to refer us to.

Hi everyone! I am in the Cedar Rapids area, and new to TTC. We just moved to the area last year, and I went to the midwives in Iowa City for my yearly exam.

So far, I am thinking to deliver there when the time comes, but wanted to know if there is anywhere else recommended in the area. Being new to CR, and not knowing anyone, I didn't have anyone to ask when I made my first appointment with the midwives.

I don't mind driving to IC if that is the best place to go, but if there is somewhere in CR that isn't bad, I'd like to be able to check it out too.

Thanks!

I would recommend HOME. But that's just me

Are you referring to the midwives at UI? As far as CR goes, I have been told that Mercy is the way to go and that St Lukes is less natural friendly, not as breastfeeding friendly, etc. But I think it's really a matter of perspective. I have not delivered at either and chosen to go with homebirth here in CR. I would recommend you go to the LLL meetings to find resources. There are also resources at Birth, Baby and Beyond they have a list of classes and opportunities on their site for more information.

Iowa City resources

Welcome. Here are some great local resources to add to pp.

Courses:
* Bradley Method, North Liberty http://www.bradleybirth.com/ndweb.asp?ID=S717
* Birthworks, Iowa City http://iowacitybirthworks.googlepages.com/home [this is an amazing class. I took it as a part of my doula certification]
* Courses available through Birth Baby and Beyond (BabyMatters), located in Cedar Rapids
http://www.babymatters.org/class.php , specifically the Lamaze class
Babymatter has a doula registry for Cedar Rapids

There are a few doulas in Iowa City with experience working with the UIHC midwives

Bamboo Birth Services- doula www.bamboobirth.com,
Katherine Parker Bryden
Lauren Wipperman
Jenn Bowen
And a few others who are on leave. You can find most of us on online doula registries
