Flannel on RRP's

Hi,

I am new here and happy to be. I have been researching the RRP diapers, and I believe I could sew some of these up. I am expecting my 4th child in July. I only used pfds and some fitteds with the prior child, but I've always wanted to sew a diaper

I wanted your opinion on which flannels to use with this pattern. Will the longevity of the diapers decrease if I use the flannel from my local fabric stores (Jo-Ann's, Hancock, Wal-Mart)? For those of you who have use local fabric store flannels, how do you diapers hold up?

Thanks so much for the advice.

I like to use really bright cute flannel purchased on sale ($2 a yard!) from JoAnn's or Hancock's and I have some RRP's that I made probably six months ago that are still great. The print is a little faded and fuzzy but I bet they have a year of use left in them.
Go for it!

i've made some with both flannel i bought at walmart and joanns. imo the joanns flannel didn't fade as much, but both still looked good though!!

Any flannel works great. I have never ordered "expensive" flannel and only use Walmart, Joann's, and Hancock flannel. And some fade more than others and it does not seem to depend on where I got them from, or how expensive they are. It is completely random. But all of them fade/pill a bit the first few washes, and then they are nice and soft and last forever. I have never had a flannel diaper get holes on me yet. Maybe they look used, but they go forever.

I'm in the middle of making a slew of RRP's for my friend that has a new foster baby. I hope to post pictures soon.
Off to sew.....

I am in the midst of complimenting my stash with some RRP. I bought the fabric from Joann's for $2/yd, so I figure even if it only lasts a year, it's still a good deal! I'm also toying around with the idea of making some from an old flannel sheet.

Pictures!!

OK here's my recently completed RRP's stash. I made these for a friend that has a new foster baby that she wants to start cloth diapering.
This is approximately $12 worth of flannel and elastic... I had plenty of thread.

My 3 favorites are these...

Closure?

Tattoedmama...those look AWESOME!

Can I ask you:
a) how many layers of flannel did you use?
b) How do the diapers close? I don't see any Aplix or snaps...
c) Do they absorb really well?

Thanks!

Can I ask you:
a) how many layers of flannel did you use?
2 layers turned and topstitched. They are a fitted pocket (quick dry!)
b) How do the diapers close? I don't see any Aplix or snaps...
They are a one size diaper that closes with one diaper pin. By designing the pattern (Thank you amberthesugarcat!!!!) to not use closures it is easily adjustable to multiple children or grows with the baby.
c) Do they absorb really well?
Yes, with a microfiber insert or infant prefold stuffed inside they are SUPER SUPER absorbant. We accidentally left one on DS overnight instead of our usual Fuzzi Bunz and he was soaked in the morning, but not his PJ's or the bed!
I love love love this diaper pattern. I am addicted to brightly colored flannel.

Great job!

Those diapers look great! Too cute!

Can't wait to start sewing mine up. Too busy drying out my basement here in Eastern Iowa after all of the rain, and now back to more cold snow:

Tatooedmama; What method did you use to sew in the elastic? If you've tried more than one way, which is your preferred? Do they work well for a newborn?

Thanks.

Hello from Iowa...
I am not sure what the "method" is called, it's not the blind elastic, I know that. I tack and sew my elastic in the leg seam allowance, then turn and topstitch... whatever that's called.

I haven't used them with a newborn yet, but I'd like to some day.
I think my littlest one was 6-8 months old when I discovered this pattern on here.

I haven't tried the ruffled elastic, but in the pattern, it says that it can be a little tricky your first couple of times. As someone who has never sewn elastic, I wasn't going anywhere near tricky. I found the elastic in the seam allowance pretty easy to get the hang of, and I think it looks really professional.
