Favorite Children's Books - Page 2

Here are some recent favorites of my six-year-old girl:

Edward Eager's magic books
Beverly Cleary -- the Ramona and Henry Huggins series
She really likes those early-chapter series (I'm not as big a fan, but hey -- I'm not six years old), so she is devouring Katie Kazoo, Dragon Slayers Academy, the Daisy Meadows fairy books, and Junie B. Jones
The Doll People and The Meanest Doll in the World
The Oz books
No Flying in the House

I love Julia Donaldson books, like The Gruffalo, A Squash and a Squeeze, The Smartest Giant in Town, Monkey Puzzle, Room on the Broom etc. I think I have half the books memorised.

Robert Muncshe (sp?) is quickly becoming a hit at our place. I just wish I had his flair for telling stories. One of my favourite childhood memories is when he came to our school to read Mortimer.

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight is a huge hit because my LO loves his dinos.

We also have some older books for him, kind of like discovery books on topics like dinosaurs, oceans, animals. Lots of scenic pictures and short little descriptions of what is going in, he loves them. He also loves those National Geographic special editions with the great photos, particularly of animals.

Sandra Boyton is great too, especially Hippos Gone Berserk.

Karen Katz is wonderful for younger kids, my 2 year old really connected with her when he was younger (pre 1).

My MIL is a former ECE/Elementary school teacher so she keeps us well supplied with good book ideals.

He's from the States but has been living in Canada (Guelph, ON) since the 70s. I think when he was younger he was a great live story teller but he's awful now. So pompous and rude to children. At least that's been my experience having him in classrooms about 10 years ago. Really intolerant of child and tween questions and behaviour and only wanting to talk about how much money he's made.

Most of my daughters books are in Russian, but my favourite English childrens books are:

Goodnight Moon
Are You My Mother
The Velveteen Rabbit
Wynken, Blynken and Nod
The Tawny Scrawny Lion
Where The Wild Things Are
Counting Kisses
I Am a Bunny
Guess How Much I Love You

I adored the Berenstain Bears books when I was young, the Amelia Bedelia books and The Little Bear series.
