Would worsted work for a newborn hat?

I want to do some charity knitting. Would worsted be too heavy? I plan to make the hats for full term babies at my local hospital.

I think it would be fine? Just make sure they're not knitted too small, when dd1 was born, the hospital didn't have any that would fit her head. lol

I don't see why not! I've made newborn hats with worsted weight before and they turned out fine.

Not only did I make all of my newborn hats from worsted, they were crocheted, thus thicker than knitting

They were great, no problem at all.

I've also used worsted for newborn hats with no problem.

Worsted is great - they'll knit up fast so you can make more! Just don't use fuzzy yarn; the little bits that come off can irritate (lungs, eyes, etc.)

I too prefer worsted - works up quick and the color choices are endless instead of just pastels!

Exactly what I was going to say. Last year for Lent I did a project someone mentioned here of 40 hats in 40 days, & 90% of those were worsted weight.

My nb hat is knitted w/ worsted yarn and it is great. I used the umbillical cord hat pattern from stitch and b*tch and that is what it called for

ITA. You can use worsted weight. I do. I use simply soft, etc. Whatever you use, make sure it's really soft and not fuzzy.

Thanks for all the input, I will definately use worsted, they will work up nice and fast this way.
