a cervical cerclage (or stitch?)?! unfortunately I might need one i had a cone biopsy - leep - done last april and the dr took almost my entire cervix!! he said it was necessary, but not true. w/out going into all that.... we had our first appt w/ the m/w today. all went well except my cervix is about 60-70% shorter . It is still completely closed but she really wants me to see her backup OB so they can 'talk about it together.'

So, just wondering if my fellow MDC mammas have any input/info/sugg?!?

No experience but wanted to give you my $.02. I have had premature dialation and effacement with my last two pregnancies which resulted in two premature births, and two stays in the NICU. We expect the same this time also. I am not a candidate for cerclage because of preterm contractions, however, if I were I would do it in a heartbeat. If it would help me make it closer to term it would totally be worth it.

Best of luck in what ever you decide.

I know someone that had it- she was told it was this or bedrest. She had 4 others to take care of, so she opted for the stitch. IIRC, she was out of commission for 2 days, but then back on her active feet and had a healthy full term baby (vaginally).

I belong here, you'll get any info you need. a perinatlogist is the best person to ask, I won't say you'll have to ditch the midwife, you should be able to have your normal birth but in the middle your likely to have a whole lot of monitoring, which you may not have expected or wanted

stitches works for many women but there ARE risks, you can loose your baby with it, or without it and because of the stitch itself. It's a hard one

How many weeks are you?

Just for others who read this a stitch does NOT mean no bedrest, many have to still have bedrest unless they get an abdominal stitch and then have a section

Thanks for the site, I will check it out. I am 11wk/6d. I have done some research and see that best results/less infection tends to happen if it is inserted b4 14weeks. Which would mean we have to make the decision soon. My m/w said that she would absolutely continue my care but yes -- I would probably have much more monitoring/intervention than I ever dreamed of. Ugh. I'm quite nervous.

And thanks to everyone for your responses! It is good to hear different things from different people. Every situation is different for every person.

You should get your nuchal scan this week if you can, they will want that before the stitch and they can check your length again

Before 14 weeks is the norm, usually around 12/13 weeks, but there is always a chance of infection till it comes out. ie no sex for a while

I have had one if you have any questions and good luck with it!!

Hello, just wanted to let you know that I had a shorten cervix since a leep as well and carried my son to term (38 weeks) on total bedrest from 6months on and constant ultra sounds and monitoring of cervical length...

Then I was pregnant again 2 years later and lost my baby at 19 1/2 weeks. My cervix was fine on Friday at my ultra sound (everything Good) and on Monday I lost my baby quickly with out a lot of warning (incompetent cervix). It was horrible and I pray you never have to experience anything like that...

Now I am pregnant again (6 months after loss) and am 20 weeks pregnant. I had a cerclage put in at 14 weeks and so far so good. I would never want to go thru with what happened last time so I am glad this is available to me... I wish you luck in your decision. Just make sure you rest alot and take it easy because you need the extra time off your feet. Please contact me if you need anything. Otherwise, I will post later and let you know how it's going. Blessings to you and the family
