Spelling Power trouble

Thread Starter
I have an almost 9 year old, who is a great reader but a bad speller.
We started using Spelling Power about 2-3 weeks ago.
We both like the program.
I like that there is no prep, the time commitment for both of us is short, adn that it doesnt use lists of words she might already know.
She likes the activities- esp. the artsy ones and the freedom to choose the activities.
However, I have noticed this last week she is not doing well at all on the review quizes. She gets about half wrong. I know we hit a point where the words in general were harder for her. I re read the book, and feel we are following it pretty closely for her age group. We only use it 2-3 times a week, which may be a factor.
Do you use it it, and have any advice?
Or any advice about spelling teaching in general.
Or perhaps- her bad genetics are just rearing their ugly head again?

thanks

RE: Spelling Power Trouble

It might be that you aren't using the program often enough. Maybe try using it 4 or 5 days a week for a few weeks and see if that helps. Or it could be the program itself.

We tried Spelling Power two years ago when my son was 10. He liked it, however did terrible on the reviews and didn't know how to spell the words he learned. It was quite frustrating for both of us.

We stopped using it for a few months, tried again, then gave up. I like Spelling Power because of the extra's, but he just never got the rules for each list.

After that we tried Sequential Spelling, starting with Book 1. After just a few weeks, his spelling greatly improved and he still remembers how to spell the words he learned. They have a sample on their website to try out with your child to see if it works before you buy.

Good Luck!

Same here, Spelling Power did not work for us. We switched to Sequential Spelling and love it.

We used spelling power at one time as well. DD enjoyed using it but never really learned how to spell the words. Like you had mentioned, she loved the activities in the back. We gave it up eventually. Now, we don't use any formal spelling lessons. I've found that shes learning to spell just as well, if not better, doing things that involve writing/reading or typing instead of structural spelling lists and such.
Pen pals are great!
She loves to practice cursive writing and copies sentences from books in cursive.
We play scrabble often and have found a card game at a thrift store called quiddler that is fun.
She loves making books and loves to write in a nature journal during the warm months.

We're a third who have switched from Spelling Power to Sequential Spelling. Since Spelling Power goes to such a high level, I've hung on to it for when we complete the 7 levels of Sequential Spelling. The Sequential Spelling is even easier to use, so we like the lack of prep.

I switched, also.
