As I type this, he asleep on my chest. He has been nursing alot, and hasnt had a bottle since he was released. They called this morning and basically told me to come do the CPR video and take him home. His brothers are loving him! Ill fill you all in more later....specially on the Drs stupidity and the fit I threw last night.......but needless to say, he is home and happy and doing good now!
The story you all have been waiting for:
When I showed up on Saturday, his nurse (one we had asked several times to not care for him because she doesnt listen) told me she called the Dr cause he looked a little puffy, and the Dr ordered Lasix (sp?) to be given 2x over the weekend. I told her he had looked that way since birth, and nothing was ever said about it, so why start now? When we came in Sunday with Grandpa, she was working again....she was so excited that he peed 3x in 3 hours, which meant the meds were working and that he wouldnt be as puffy.....I left a note for the Dr to call me because I wanted to know what the HELL was going on.
Monday morning around noon, Dr calls me. First he tells me he is concerned that AJ lost an ounce over the weekend (he gets bathed and weighed Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays). Then he tells me that AJ puked this morning and that was concerning. I asked him if the nurse burped him properlly (id left instructions on how to burp him, since he was a hard burper like 2 of my other kids), he asked the nurse and she said "well he fell asleep after eating so I didnt think he needed to burp" He told me if he continues to puke, they will need to monitor him for a few weeks to make sure it isnt something serious. If not, he could go home Thursday, provided he had no more desats.
I showed up Monday evening to feed him, only to find out they changed his feeding schedule and shoved an NG tube back in. Not only did they put the largest one they had in (after it says in his file that he is to get the smaller one due to gagging issues), I found out she had put it in right after his morning feed, and the puking episode he had was approx 15 minutes after that. Which explains the puking issue that morning, but no one even thought about that til I pointed it out. It is standard procedure you dont insert or remove an NG or OG tube for atleast 2 hours after eating. Not to mention, it also says in his chart if anything changes in his care or in his well being, I am to be called....no one has ever called me. I had even talked to the nurse 2x that day and when I asked if there were any changes she said no.
Tuesday I called up to tell them I was running a few minutes late for his feeding, but dont feed him cause I would be there to breastfeed....."ohh mom, the dr changed his feedings again, put him on adlib (eats whenever he wants as much as he wants), and he also said that if Ayden doesnt gain weight by tomorow they are going to give him his NG tube back, and not allow him anything by mouth for 2 days so that he can gain some weight back."
As soon as DP got home a few minutes later, I didnt even bother to ask him if he was going up there with me, I just left. I walked in the door of the NICU at 7:30 exactly, and within 5 minutes had the Charge nurse by his bedside, along with his day nurse since she hadnt left yet, his night nurse, and 2 other nurses that had been there off and on caring for him.
I went off on the day nurse for not calling me...even went as far as to ask her if she knew how to read since on the front of the chart and all over in the chart it says to contact me if there are any changes...she said she didnt realize that a feeding change was such a big thing...before I could say anything, charge nurse stepped in and told day nurse that since I was a breastfeeding mom, small changes like that are very important. Nurse didnt even apologize
Then I turned to the charge nurse and the night nurse and instructed both of them to leave a message for the dr, that when he sees my son in the morning, before he makes any changes, he is to call me first. I also told the chrage nurse to leave him a side note, letting him know that I think his stupity in regards to my sons care needs to be looked at. If he doesnt realize that there were factors contributing to his weight loss, including his own stupidity in giving him lasix, then I want him off my sons care, I would sign him out AMA, and take him straight to Childrens to be assessed. I would not allow him to place a tube back in my son, and jeapordize our nursing...not after we had worked hard for 2 weeks on it. At the end of the note in all caps it said "AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO MY SONS CARE WITHOUT CALLING ME FIRST"
I told the nurse before I left, that if the Dr did not call me, I was going to come in and make them call him, so I could discuss my sons care with him.....I was not going to continue to let them do what they were doing, specially since I didnt feel it was right for my child.
I got a call around 10 am wedensday morning, from the Charge nurse and all she said was "You and your husband need to come watch the CPR video, and bring your carseat with you, your taking your son home"
Dr was there when we got there, but he wouldnt even look at me, or come talk to me.....he knows better..LOL...he was one of the peds on my twins care in the NICU at a different hospital 2 years ago...he knows I can be pissy when it comes to my kids care, and that I wouldnt do anything I didnt feel and know was right for my kids. In my sons chart, his weight loss was now noted as "due to medicines given". His puking episode was changed from a random event, to "caused by NG placement" I had them weigh him before leaving and he was up 3oz from Monday....nurse went and told Dr and all he said was to keep breastfeeding him, and only supplement if he seems hungry still after nursing.
I felt bad for the nurses the night before because they had to deal with me being pissed and throwing a dang fit, but I am so sick of the medical feild and all that it entails.
