Told to Cover at YMCA, WWYD? - Page 3

OK, I'm planning on mailing it tommorrow. I don't see how the YMCA could be considered a private club any more so than Sam's Club or anywhere else that charges an entrance fee (disney world, for example). The suit that was brought for civil discrimination here, was actually against a fitness club in columbus, as I recall, and I don't see how the YMCA could possibly be considered anything different than them.

The YMCA accepts public and federal funding, and as such, cannot discriminate. Look where playing "private club" got the BSA.

Don't leave, don't stop, don't disturb your child at all. Don't change your behavior in the future either, unless and until they provide you with a writen request. When(if) they give you your letter, give them a photocopy of the state law. Then share it with your lawyer and the local newspaper/stations. If they drop it (which they proabably will) then the issue will be resolved until the next closed-minded idiot comes along (then you just rinse and repeat)...

Even if they give you the letter, on company letterhead, chances are by the time you get it, your child will be done feeding. And, as an added bonus, you will have provable grounds for a sexual harassment. Plus, they will NOT like the pulicity they get when you share their letter with officials and newscasters!
And MDC members, too, lol.

I think that sounds good actually, it can be done calmly, and the mom doesn't need to get into on of those arguments where the employee keeps repeating versions of "but you are offending someone somewhere or might offend someone somewhere" over and over.

I am not happy with my YMCAs policy but also need the membership for my children so I am not ok with them revoking my membership and don't have the money, time or energy to go about suing them.
So as much as I hate it I will follow their rules while in the facility.

Actually, I'm not involved in FirstRight.

That said, I am on the founding board of the Ohio Breastfeeding Coalition and we would be more than happy to help. (Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been out of the country and just returned yesterday.)

While I agree it would be good to have this in the FirstRight database, I honestly think there's an advantage to working through these issues locally when there's an active state breastfeeding coalition. While FirstRight has the potential to be a powerful national force, there's something to be said for contacting your state group which likely has established access to local press, local legal counsel and other local contacts which make handling these things a little faster.

This group came out of the applebee's nurse-in and includes Jen the Lactivist, who was mentioned earlier.

Non-profits may lose some funding for discriminating on certain bases (depends on the kind of discrimination and the source of the funding), but usually not enough for them to care. The BSA lost some funding but they kept the discriminatory policy and appear to be doing just fine. And let's not forget Ronald McDonald House - also doing just fine.

The legal remedy is the one I mentioned a few pages ago - the Ohio Civil Rights Commission.
