What is it called when...

a placenta has "grown into the uterus"?

My MIL had a near fatal hemorrhage with her second baby, and they told her it was because the placenta had grown into the uterus. Now I was under the impression that it was attached, then came away after the baby was born, so I'm wondering if they just tried to yank it out too quickly and it lead to a hemmorrhage.

Either way, she is horrified that we will be having a HB because she almost died giving birth in a hospital. Granted, she hemorrhaged, then they sent her home and the second she walked in the door, the bleeding started again.

Did she have a csection for her first by chance?
It sounds like placenta accreta which is very, very rare but more common with post-cesarean pregnancies.

No, it was a vaginal delivery for both - and both boys were posterior - to add to the fun, and she was strapped down on her back the whole time for both
That does sound familiar, and she did require a hysterectomy. Can it be diagnosed by ultrasound?

The poor woman, her births were both so traumatic for her, she is having such a hard time relating to me right now looking forward to mine, it brings up such painful stuff for her

Yes, rare--but more common in women with some sort of uterine surgery history, be that csec, d&c, IUD injury (presence of scarring). As for her needing a hysterectomy, well that was a long time ago. Yes, women do still get hystos for uncontrolled uterine bleeding at birth, but things have changed some.

Anyway--it is just very unlikely for this to happen to you! How sad that she was left with such a frightening sense of birth--and still carries so much grief and fear. Maybe your birth will be the prompt she needs toward healing her old stuff....
