Gift for 8 year old who read all the Harry Potter books

My daughter has a friend who read all the Harry Potter books. I'd like to give her a book that she'd love to read that's along those lines. Are there any other series out there that are like that that I could give for an 8th birthday?

My dd just turned 8 and loved Harry Potter - Another loved series is Septimus Heap, which I think starts with Flyte (the other books are Magyk and Physix). She also liked Inkspell and Dragon Rider. Can't remember any of the authours off hand.

Good luck

Perfect! I looked it up, Magyk is first, and this looks absolutely perfect. How exciting to be the one to introduce her to a new series. I called a locally owned bookstore and they have it in stock, so I'm getting it today. Thanks!!!

Some series that my dd (9) has enjoyed are The Land of Elyon, Lemony Snicket, Gaia Girls, The Sisters Grimm, and Starcatchers.

I'm going to have to look into those other recommendations - she reads voraciously!

"the dark is rising" (susan cooper) is another series along the same line, in a general sort of way. i'm not sure if 8 is the intended age, but if she's powered though the HP's i'm sure it won't be a problem.

(note: don't be confused by that almost completely unrelated movie that came out recently. books are nothing like that!)

the dark is rising by susan cooper is brilliant, better than hp

ITA about dark is rising. (but then again, i don't really like the HP books. is that bad to admit around here?)

i haven't read any anne mc caffrey, but i just thought of another series that isn't totally thrilling, but is sort of enjoyable. The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. this includes The Black Cauldron which was a newberry honor book and The High King, which was a newberry medal winner.

ooo! yeah. i actually have just recently read the first two books, reprinted in "volume 1". i found the first one to be sort of boring and the second to be very exciting! but that's def. a good rec.

So glad to see other people recommending The Dark is Rising books--they are fabulous--I read them as a kid and am still recommending them to people. The Artemis Fowl books are good too.

The Golden Compass series is amazing. My 9 yr old nephew is really enoying them right now (and so am I!)

I agree that The Dark is Rising is far superior to Harry P. However, I think that it's really better for an older kid. HP is not a terribly challenging read, and DIR is much more so.

My 8yo is currently reading Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, a five-book series. I loved it as a kid and I love it again, now. It's pitched more toward the 8-12yo group.

I second the recommendation for the Lemony Snicket books. I believe there are 13 total in the series. My sister loved these books.
