Cord Question

Anisa lost her cord at 5 days old. Is this normal? Now she has a little scab for her belly button is. It has a little puss coming from it. Should I call the doctor or is this normal?

I've always heard that if it's not red or smelly it's probably fine. Both my kids cords were a little pussy looking for a day or two after the stump fell off. Ephraim's actually had a little bleeding for a day or two.

If you're worried a call to the doc couldn't hurt.

I wouldn't worry unless it looks infected. If nothing else, squirt a little breastmilk on it.

Breastmilk is a great idea. I am still waiting for Natalie's cord to fall off. She is 2 weeks old and the darn thing is still hanging on.

But if there is no redness, swelling, or increased discharge I wouldn't worry about it.

DS2 just had his fall off at 9 days.. his had dried blood and blood.. no pus but is red.

I would let it air out if you can, put breastmilk on it and give it the weekend. If it has pus on monday, I might put a call in to the pedi, even just ask for a nurse. They might suggest, a mild soap wash and neosporin.. but to me breastmilk is better!

Are you sure it's pus? Is it green or yellowish? River and Skye (both early-cordlosers) both lost a bit of serrous fluid from their cord sites after they fell off, and River bled a bit, on and off, for over a week. The midwives didn't get concerned...
