Manga suggestions?

DSD seems to be expressing some interest in manga, and I think with a good kind of book she could really get into it. Any suggestions? She likes vampires, and all things creepy. Chibi, and Vampire Knight come up with Amazon search. Anyone read these? Any other suggestions are welcome...

I'm thinking of picking up a couple books for her birthday that's coming up.

Thanks again!

The site I'm going to link to is broader than Manga, but it's a great place to start. You can browse graphic novels and comics by age range or genre.

No Flying, No Tights

NFNT's core Manga list for teens.

She likes creepy? Things I've read and liked with *s on the ones that are safer for teenagers:
You already know about Chibi Vampire* and Vampire Knight*, Rozen Maiden*, Parasyte (lots of violence), Godchild (violence against children--father beats his son with a cane for instance in a flashback), Petshop of Horrors*, xxxHolic*, Courtney Crumrin* (written for children), Alice 19th*, 3x3 Eyes, Eat-man, Kindaichi Case Files* (mystery with some creepy elements), Mai the Psychic Girl, Millennium Snow* (vampires), Vampire Princess Miyu, Tomie (horror), Tarot Cafe, and Bizenghast*

Blood+ and Hellsing I haven't read, but they look like really violent vampire mangas. Deathnote is super creepy and I can't read it because of the appearance of one of the main characters. Model involves vampires.

Sorry, just reread and saw that you want ideas of what to buy. I'd definitely get the Courney Crumrin or Chibi Vampire books. Or the first book of each of those. (CC is only 3 volumes long though.)

She might like "X" by Clamp; it's not vampire but it has a lot of elements that these other manga that are being suggested also have.

I would also agree that Hellsing and Blood+ are very violent.

By the way, which birthday will this be for her? And what has she read/watched that lets you know she likes vampires?

Dsd is 14. She loved Twilight series, and is currently reading Dracula. I'm not guessing here that she likes vampires, she likes to talk about them often, and just says that "vampires are cool".

I just spent over an hour at the book store, and was glad to recognize many titles from what you guys have mentioned. I ended up choosing Chibi Vampire, and a book on drawing manga. I might go back as Easter approaches to add another book to her basket (I'm thinking Godchild or Blood...). I probably will end up saving manga stuff for the Easter basket, and instead for her birthday she'll be getting "House of the Night" series by Cast (which I also bought at B&N today).

I am awful with gifts... I really want to show her what I got, and there is still almost two weeks left! But I'll be good, I just need to wrap it up to keep temptation away...

If she gets into manga, I'll be back to this thread to throw a few suggestions at her. I kind of hope she might get interested in romantic stuff as well, there were some really cute manga books that I saw there... Thanks for all your help!

These aren't manga, but at 14 she'd be old enough for and would likely enjoy Robin McKinley's "Sunshine" novel, Barbara Hambly's "Those Who Hunt the Night", and the old television series Forever Knight.

Also Terry Pratchett's "Carpe Jugulum" which while part of a humor series does a nice dark look at vampires.

She also might like Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire series, but that has some bits that are more explicit sexually although nothing too bad, but you'd want to check your family's comfort level on those. (Well, on any book really, I just know that those in particular have some more "adult" themes.)

Wasn't asking why you knew she liked vampires because I was doubting you , was asking what she was into to give me a better feel for what she'd already read and what else she might like.

If she loved Twilight series, I think she must like this book - Vampire Academy, I saw this book on a deal site, really looks fine

The story is well written with a gripping plot and characters that are both realistic and real. Not only do I feel as though I an starting to know these people and their world, I also find myself actually caring about what happens to them. The novel is indeed darker than the average YA offering. But it is in no way traumatizing or depressing. It is simply placed in a world that is grittier and more dangerous than that of most people.
