Preparing Fleece for Cloth Diaper?

So, I've been playing around making some new diapers for DS. Here's my question: I'm making him some pocket fitteds, and wanted to try making the inner layer fleece. I like it because it's nice and soft, and with the pocket diapers (bought, not made) I have, it does a nice job of wicking away moisture. So, I made one tonight, and then tried pouring some water on it and it just beaded up on the fleece. Obviously, this is not what I'm going for.

Do I need to wash it before it will absorb? I bought anti pill fleece from Joann's. Any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

I thought it was a special kind of fleece that you had to buy in order to have absorbing fleece. I buy the anti-pill fleece from Joann's too but I use it for covers/outers.

AFAIK, people only use microfleece for inners. It'll say "microfleece" right on the end of the bolt.

And no, it's polyester and doesn't need prewashing.

i use microfleece as inners and i dont pre wash them. when i pour water on it, the water just beads around it. but that is not how a baby pees.. :-) so i squirt water on it with a syringe and i got the effect that i want. my DD is wearing pocket fleece diapers and they worked great though a little bulky.

yup, it will bead up at first, lol, but when baby pees, it goes right through to your soaker layer, and feels somewhat dry on the surface
