How many layers do you use?

Depends on the absorbancy you want, kwim? I used one layer of cotton fleece in otto boxers when my youngest was potty learning last year, it was enough to get him to the toilet if he realized he needed to go potty a little late. It didn't hold a full-on pee though. I modified modified the pattern so that the front and back center pieces are one long piece, there is a post on SM about it.
I think if you want to make PUL-style trainers that will hold a full-bladder's worth, then you need to look at the diaper absorbancy you are using now and just trim it down a bit.
