Silk and flannel baby blanket?

I want to make some of these for our new baby, I really like the sarah's silks ones here:

Anyone ever make one? What type of silk would be good? I have a bunch that is 5 mm but I think I'd need something heavier. Also, would it need to be quilted or tied in the middle somewhere to keep the two sides together?

Thanks

I would tend to think a thicker silk would hold up better in teh long run. You shoudl be alright without tieing or quilting it as long as it's a fairly smallish blanket without any batting. Now, if you wanted a twin-bed size, you might want to tie it.

I haven't sewn much with silk, so how much heavier should I use? I've been browsing the thaisilks site, but I'm not sure what I need. 10 mm?15mm?

I like to use 19mm silk charmeuse(crepe backed silk satin). With the Satin side as the face of your blanket it makes such a smooth and soft surface. I have used the habotai(china silk) too but definitely prefer the charmeuse.

I have also never tied or quilted the blankets I've done, the largest being 45"x72". Now if you are planning to have a batting in the middle some minor quilting or stitching would be helpful to keep and to help prevent bunching.

I found a couple fabrics at thaisilks that might be what you use:

Charmeuse, 19mm, 54"

Silk Charmeuse; Satin, Plain Back, 45"

Is this what you mean?

Thanks!

Try Dharma.
Less expensive too

I checked it out, but it looks like their shipping to Canada might be more than with thaisilks. Thanks for the recommendation though.
