Eco friendly lunch bags, water bottles... help!

Thread Starter
Hi everyone!

I spent some time today researching eco friendly lunch boxes, bages, and water bottles. I actually confused myself upon doing this. I don't use the juice boxes and have always sent my kids with sport type water bottles with filtered water from our home to school. I also don't use the water bottles purchased at the store (poland springs etc.) Ok. I find out the sports bottles have a PEP in it worse than in the water bottles from the store! I did find one naglene brand of a sport bottle that states it doesn't have any plastic leaching or lead in it, but mothering magazine posted an article stating not to use one of the plastics listed as safe by the naglene company.

Not to mention I use Alum Foil (not the best I know) to wrap the sandwich because my tupper ware type of sandwich holders did not return home, but what else is there?

I am confused and wanted to have your inputs from those of you who do send kids to school on what you use that is safe for your child and the environment ( I do hope it comes home so a $15 water bottle is risky).

Thanks for reading.

I am very new to all of this, so I hope that this is ok. I use a thermos for the kids drinks. The little ones for kids; they were 1/2 off after school started in the fall. A lot of people talk about the Bento boxes for the food, but I don't know about the drinks! I am very curious about this, too.

Maybe not the very BEST choice, for sandwiches and the like, but at least a BETTER choice than zipper bags is unbleached waxed paper bags. The ones at our local healthfood store are made from recycled post consumer paper.

I don't know if anyone is still checking this thread but...

Here are some choices for bottles:

ThinkSport Jr. (stainless steel)
Thermos Funtainer (stainless steel)
Klean Kanteen (stainless steel)
Nalgene Tritan Grip n Gulp (BPA-free plastic - newly released)

As for lunch boxes, the best one I've found is the Laptop Lunch kit. It's BPA-free and has 4 containers + a box with utensils.

Here are some good water bottles: www.flylady.net. You also might want to check camping / hiking supply stores. (Those might not be cheap, so it's probably a good idea to wait for the summer sale.)

Well, I have no school aged kids yet, but we have Kleen Kanteens for the whole family including the two year old.
I just found this site: http://www.thetickletrunk.com/store.php
They have a stainless steel lunch container that I am planning on getting. And really good prices.
reuseablebags.com has a lot of great stuff and good prices, too.

for kid stainless steel water bottles, we got each of ours these. Lots of cute designs on them and they are the perfect size for the kids to hook onto their belt loops or similar. They sell them at our local sunflowers, but the link I included is toysrus.

My favorite combo is the laptop lunchbox and the thermos funtainers. I also sew my own cloth lunch bags for them to go to school in (I don't worry about making them waterproof or anything they are just to keep all the lunch stuff together).

I just got the coolest lunchbox and food containers from reusablebags.com for my daughter.

I love the concept of the lunchbox - made from recycled juice boxes.

The food containers are pricy but finally I can throw out all that plastic!

I make reuseable snack bags and sandwich wraps. They are made with PUL that is lined with hemp jersey. When you open the sandwich wrap you have a nice little placemat to eat on. For drinks we use Kleen Kanteens.

We use organic cotton lunch sacks for lunches and snack taxis for sandwiches and snacks. For water bottles we use Kleen Kanteen.
