SFG and Big Plants

Last year was my first year with a garden and it was definitely an interesting experience. I had the most trouble with my squash, and I'm wondering if anyone has any good tips on how to do those huge, vining plants in a square foot garden. My summer squash and zucchini did okay, though the squash had a tendency to grow to about 3-4" then rot, but I tried acorn squash and that was a disaster. I had these HUGE leafy vines that took up so much room (they ran out of the box and all over my grass, which my husband wasn't too pleased about, and I only ended up getting one squash per plant. Rrgh.

So.. any ideas? We're planning on making more beds this year, so that should help some, too. But is there a really good way to do big plants in a SFG?

Thanks!

no experience here, but my plan is to try to get my winter squash to grow up a teepee stick frame thingie. i have them planned for outer-edge plots, and if they spill over, that's okay with me.

They need a ton of room for the vines. That means you can go out or up (or both )

We are planning to do some of both, but mostly let it go out in the yard. We'll have to move it to mow but most of the grass isn't in great shape anyway so I'd rather have good watermelons than good grass

Anyway, if you want to grow those things, you have to have space for the vines somewhere
