Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Problems

I am using a mix one part borax and one part washing soda for dishwasher detergent with a vinegar rinse. Most of the times my stuff is coming out with a white film(?) Any suggestions to fix this? Other than that we've had no problems with stuff getting clean.

You know, I have managed to replace almost all my commercial cleaners with the exception of dishwasher powder. Everything else is wonderful but I have never found anything but commercial cleaners that will work in the old dw. I am always left with a white film. I think it is our extremely hard water.

All was well for about 3 days then it started. I had to completely rewash (and scrub) all my glasses. My friend tried it on my recommendation then called me in a snit because not only did it not work, she thinks it pitted the metal inside of her dw.

I have tried every possible concoction and nothing works. Let me know if you find success. I'd love to quit using the gross stuff I use now.

Yeah, the weird thing was as you said that it was fine at first. Then it was hit or miss. I may try to experiment with my concoction a bit. I'll post if I find anything successful.
