but I've never planted anything before. Any tips on how to get started?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

Do you have ground to plant in or are you going to do containers outside or inside?
What are some of your favorite veggies? some might be easier/harder or suited or not for your climate.
go check some gardning books out of the library (it's sometimes overwhelming, but get some read, come back here ask questions)
contact your ag extention agent to get ideas of specific to your area.
From your location under your user name, it says Boston....
might want to check out The Fenway Victory Gardens http://www.fenwayvictorygardens.com/history.html
don't know what their practices are pertainig to organic/chemical but you can adapt things to suit you. on their site they have a spot on how does your garden grow, might want to check that out.

Thanks so much! I do have ground to plant and I was also considering container gardening. It's still cold here in April so I just want to get started.

The book "The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food" will help you immensely. You will need to add compost to the site you want to plant. Are you doing raised beds? If so you will need to find someone looking to get rid of some dirt and then mix compost with it. You might want to start with plants this year and then maybe start with seeds next year. Abundant Acres has heirloom plants http://abundantacres.net/ which are much better than the box store plants. You might be able to find a nursery near you though that sells heirloom plants.
