Selling Books?

Ok has anyone else sold books for money?

I JUST learned from my brother and WOW...I have to say that he isn't making a ton of money...but he is in between jobs...but he has made quite a bit of money on buying books at Goodwill and then selling them to one of our local stores called Hastings...i'm talking 30 dollar profits some times!

I am going to take some of my books in that I have bought in the past year that have collected a LOT of dust ..and see what I can get from them...
Last week I tested the waters with 3 books that I had spent maybe 5 bucks on over a year ago...and i got 11 bucks! I was stoked!

So yeah anyone else sell books for money?

Wish we had a Hastings. The books I've sold to a local resale store have been current, excellent-quality books that I've gotten maybe a dollar or two for...MAYBE. Many less. I've since learned not to buy books unless they're for reference and I'll use them regularly.

I have never heard of Hastings, but I know of one really cool used book store that buys books. I have a hard time letting go of books, though. They're the one thing that I have all boxed up but just can't give away or sell. I want someday to have a room to set up a library where I can display all my books. They are my weakness.

I sell used books on Amazon. I've been doing it for years, and have made quite a bit of money. Of course, you have to be willing to schlep to the post office, etc. I will say that before you do it, get a sense for which books sell for a reasonable amount of money. For instance, paperback bestsellers or mass-produced classics (Shakespeare, Catcher in the Rye, other school standards, etc.) do not tend to earn you much. CURRENT textbooks (latest edition) are good. They do take out fees, but I've been very happy with it. Listing is pretty easy.

Yup; just in the last month or so I've gotten into selling at Amazon. I haven't gotten rich, but it's nice to get a few bucks' profit for books that were just sitting in boxes for ages!

I used to sell at Amazon and half.com when we had a bookstore where nothing was over $5 and they sold some titles that were in demand. I would go and write down the ISBN number of their books, look them up on Amazon and see how much they were going for and their popularity ranking (if the ranking was not good enough, I usually passed on the book because that meant it would sit on my shelf for a very long time before being sold), and then go back and buy the ones that would sell for a good profit. The bookstore went away, though, unfortunately. After a while, you learned to recognize some of the titles instantly that would sell well. I think you could probably do that with the cheap books at libraries that people have dropped off as donations or ones at thrift stores. Garage sales would be more tricky since you wouldn't really have a chance to look up the titles before buying them.

I have sold to Hastings many times. They also buy used DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, video games, and video game systems. You have the option to take cash, or store credit on a gift card. You will get more $ out of store credit, but the catch is you have to spend it there. It's definitely nice if you want to get more books, movies, music, etc. If you just need the cash, it won't be a lot, but it can certainly add up! We had to pawn stuff there a lot when we were struggling financially to even buy food/gas sometimes. Now we are in a much better place, but I still love to take things there for extra cash or to get new entertainment!

I've never sold on Amazon, but I do sell stuff on eBay. I don't think book sell very well on eBay, but electronics sell phenomenally well (even if they are only good for parts - but you have to mention that in your listing)!

if you sell ANYTHING on ebay, amazon, half.com, etc, ALWAYS use delivery confirmation. if you print postage through paypal, the 18 cents is WELL worth not having to deal with aggrivation! (can you tell i've learned from experience?!?!)

As far as schepping to the P.O., I think in most areas they will pick up for free at your doorstep! This is what I do when I am selling on Ebay (I go in spurts). I wish I could find something that would sell well consistently for me. I do sell books online, but only my own and I'm usually taking somewhat of a loss cause I buy many of them new. Maybe I should hit Goodwill and try that...seems like a good thing to do!
