Playdough Recipie Needed

Thread Starter
I just finished making playdough and my hands hurt!!! :

Does anyone have a playdough recipie that is smooth and soft?? I've tried playing around with my recipie and adding more H2O makes it dry out faster, and adding more oil makes it, well, more oily - but it's just a pain to knead!!! And although my 2 1/2 DS seems to like ot pull it apart, it's much to firm for him to be able to roll or knead it.

HELP!

I love this playdough recipe so much I blogged about it.

It's easy to make, super soft and stays soft for MONTHS!

My favorite recipe is:

Mom's Play Clay Recipe

1 1/2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup salt
1 package Kool-aid
2 tablespoons cooking oil
2 tablespoons alum
2 cups flour (or slightly more)

Mix water and salt together and stir for 1 minute. Add rest of ingredients and knead to a smooth dough. You can also split the recipe into 2 different bowls and put a Kool-aid package into each. They smell incredible!

This dough is way easier than cooked doughs but because the salt is partially disolved first it is nice and smooth instead of crunchy like other uncooked doughs.

Which is my variation of the recipe from Mmmmm Cookies by Robert Munsch.

I use a similar cream of tartar based recipe, but the proportions seem different? It's super smooth and long lasting. Ones with too much salt bother my hands.

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar

Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.
Variations:
* Add one package of unsweetened powdered Kool-Aid to your playdough to give it a great smell.

The only differences I see are that yours has more water and more cream of tartar.

I tried a cooked recipe with lots of cream of tartar once and it was a miserable disaster. It was lovely and smooth when done but a few weeks later when the kids went to play with it it was covered in mold I still am not sure what I did wrong but now I stick with the uncooked recipe since it is easier so I won't be so sad if it molds (though I think I am on 6 weeks with my green playdoh).

I meant to reply before and say, with this particular recipe I have had batches last as long as 8 months depending on use. Perhaps you packaged it too warm and the condensation contributed to mold?

That is entirely possible. I have heard people rave about that recipe so it was very likely user error LOL...so now I just stick with my easy recipe

So ds and I just made this, it was our first attempt at homemade playdoh. We sure have some sad looking playdoh. We used whole wheat flour b/c it's what we had and I don't think we put enough koolaid in. Other than those two things though I'm sure it will be fine, it just looks so nasty, lol.

What age would you start letting your kids play with play dough? Will my 27 month old just eat it and make a mess?

With the cream of tartar sauce recipes, do you refrigerate them? How do you store them? How long will they last?

TIA!

The cream of tartar recipe on my blog (I linked it above) doesn't need to be refrigerated. As long as it's kept in a ziploc it will stay soft for a long time. The longest I've ever kept a batch was 10 months. No mold and it was still soft enough to play with but just not as nice as a fresh batch so I tossed it and made some more.

I doubt your 27 month old would eat it. It tastes awful! Maybe a little nibble to try it out. At that age my son just liked to squish it and poke his fingers in it but it was fun.

http://www.make-baby-stuff.com/playdough-recipe.html this recipe may be the same as others, it is what I have used for months and it lasts for months! I keep mine in the fridge in glass bowls with tight fitting lids and it is just as good as new months later. (not quite such pretty colors though, between all the mixing of colors it is now either marbled pastels or pukey green, time for a new batch I think)

BASIC PLAY CLAY RECIPE
1 cup flour

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

1 cup water

1/2 cup salt

2 tsp. cream of tartar

Heat, stirring constantly, until ball forms. Knead. Store in airtight container or plastic bag. Makes about 4 portions.

This turns out really soft, my 20 mo old loves it

Ok I just made this one and it turned out great!! I was going to try Clarity's recipe but it called for too much cream of tarter, I could only get a small box at our store and it wasn't enough for her recipe.

LOL I was just on here searching the threads last night for a playdoh recipe. I made the kool aid one today and it turned out great! I made it in two batches and made one half purple and one half orange (apparently in winter you have 3 kool aid choices . The only thing I would add is that when I kneaded it, I used a lot of flour to get it not sticky. I'm still trying to decide which I like better, the purple is a little softer (added more flour during kneading) and the orange seems more solid (added more flour during mixing)...I guess I'll have to see how it holds up in the long run.

DS is two and loved it! We used cookie cutters and butter knives and spoons and chopsticks and he spent a good portion of today playing with it!

These are really great recipes. I would also suggest to use a bit of lotion--that's right, I said it, lotion to the recipe just to counteract the drying effect of salt. For a basic recipe, I would start off with about 1/4 cup of lotion and adjust as needed. This will keep your kiddo's hands from drying out.
If you choose a scented lotion, then it will add an extra appeal to it, like the Kool-Aid play dough.

Also, peanut butter play dough it great too! You can find an easy, low-sugar recipe on my blog, My House Boutique: http://myhouseboutique.typepad.com/w...lay-dough.html
