The only thing I would add is that when I kneaded it, I used a lot of flour to get it not sticky. I'm still trying to decide which I like better, the purple is a little softer (added more flour during kneading) and the orange seems more solid (added more flour during mixing)...I guess I'll have to see how it holds up in the long run.
I have a stand mixer and I have had really good luck with just throwing too "solid" or too "squishy" playdoh into the mixer and gradually adding small amounts of either flour or water till I think its perfect. I have even done that when the kids leave it out for a bit and it gets a bit dried out.

Here's mine I got from my mom. I played with it as a child; my sister makes it for her daycare; I made it for my kids and now make it for my grandkids.

Play dough

2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 T alum or cream of tartar (I've always used cream of tartar)
2 cups boiling water
1 T oil
food coloring
extract (I leave it out because the dough is way too salty to eat/suck on)

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar. Add oil, food coloring, extract to boiling water. Pour water mixture over flour and mix well. Knead on wax paper until smooth. Keep in air tight container (I use a Tupperware container. My sister uses a food storage bag.) Don't store on top of the fridge or where it could get hot.

This one makes great Christmas ornaments:

1 cup cornstarch
2 cups baking soda
1 1/4 cups water

Put all ingredients in a sauce pan on stove. Cook, stirring constantly, until thick. It will look like whipped potatoes. Knead dough. Roll it out and cut with cookie cutters. Put hole in top with a straw for hanging. Let dry or bake in low heat oven (about 300-325 degrees) until dry. Check on doneness; don't let them get brown. Paint with water colors.
