Good news for bf working mamas in NJ

Quoting from the NY Times, looks like NJ will implement paid family leave:

After an unusually emotional debate bursting with political indignation and personal anguish, the State Senate narrowly approved legislation Monday that would make New Jersey the third state in the nation to give employees the right to take paid leave to care for a newborn or a sick relative.

The measure would be financed by employee payroll deductions that would cost every worker in New Jersey a maximum of 64 cents a week, or $33 a year. Those taking the leave would be eligible for two-thirds of their salary, up to a maximum of $524 a week, for six weeks. The benefit falls short of the $917 a week that California offers but is more than double what Washington State will offer starting next year.

The bill now goes to the Assembly, which is expected to approve it on March 13. Gov. Jon S. Corzine, who has said he will sign the measure, said Monday that it was “an important step in the right direction for working families in New Jersey.” If the bill becomes law, it will take effect on Jan. 1, 2009.

Good for them! I am glad some progress is being made. Nebraska sucks in this category. See my post under "pumping at the wrong time" and see what I am dealing with. I would love to get something started for Nebraska, but I don't know how.

NOW they pass a law for paid maternity leave?

This is the first I've heard of it, but I'm going to look into it further. I'm going to write to my assemblyman. Heck, maybe I'll bring him some cookies.

I wonder how this changes the paid disability leave we already get? The article doesn't really say how it expands it. :

Yaay, that's good for them. I want that in my state, I'm gonna to start a letter campaign. I'd ask for longer leave as well.

Then again my state is 10 yrs behind.

Yeah, is this in addition to that? Because if it isn't, it doesn't really help mamas at all. Wonderful for fathers, though. I wish DH could have had some paid leave, although we couldn't have made it on that much money.

On closer inspection, I see it's an extension of the state disability program. I can't tell whether you can take the family leave AFTER your regular disability would end.

You're right, it's great for dads, and adoptive parents too. (I'm assuming adoptive moms don't have access to the current disability provisions?

My dh is required by his employer to exhaust his paid vacation and sick days before the unpaid FMLA takes over, and this law would not change that either. So barring unforseen problems that would require him to stay home full-time for over a month, he'll just be using his paid vacation time (and not using it later for a vacation).

Still, it will help some people, right?
