Your favorite foods when you attend a home birth - Page 2

Oh just wanted to add I carry Emergen-C for a beverage. Clears coffee breath, gives energy. Just requires water.

During the birth, I like quick foods that I can pop into my mouth, minimally chew and swallow, so as not to take me away from mom for too long. Also, for the mother's sake, nothing too smelly (like tuna or garlic), since I'm going to be back in her face in a minute.

Fruit salad

Mixed nuts

Oatmeal from the crock-pot (Mmmmm)

And yes, fresh coffee is always welcome here! If you don't have a brewer, if an extra person (cousin or whoever) can make a run to 7-11-awesome as well! If not, tea is good too.

After the birth, anything goes.

This is a great post!! I have already been thinking of this....

We'll definitley have coffee and tea on hand, and I am going to bake/cook ahead and freeze stuff. I also thought I would stock a box of 'birth snacks' for us, kids and m/w's when it's baby time so it would all be in one place and easy to grab.

I'm no midwife, but when I had an unassisted birth my friend brought me some vegetarian black bean soup that ROCKED. She also suggested I keep some frozen fruit available. Had I been prepared, I would have had a veggie tray with hummus, a fruit tray, muffins, some type of protein (nuts, meat if they eat it, nut butters on crackers), plenty of clean water and herbal tea.

Cheese and veggie tray -- I like quick little bites during labors.
Several births I've attended, they've ordered pizza as soon as the baby was born.

Although my most memorable was a friend's birth I was attending. After she birthed, her husband ran down the street and picked up $100+ worth of sushi to bring home as her post-birth meal. The new parents, myself, and the other midwife were in heaven. : The student midwife, however, had never had sushi and looked a bite pale at the thought.
Glad I'm lurking on you Cori. I can't promise sushi, but I'll be sure to have a cheese and veggie tray in the house

This is probably what we'll be eating after our next birth. Luckily for us we have a sushi place that delivers.

I have heard that some midwives bring groceries and cook the post-partum meal for the parents, does anyone practice that?

Aside from that, some simple things would be my preference... veggies and cheese sound great, maybe even some hummus or baba ganoush, maybe some cold cuts. But then I have dietary restrictions which would make something like a casserole an issue (not knowing what was in it, or having something in it I can't eat).
