What veggie seeds grow best planted straight into the ground? Any tips on growing this way? Once the frost risk is over of course.

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

Peas, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots.
I'm hoping to get my peas and some lettuce and carrots in the ground a week or two before our last frost date - I believe they can handle a light frost to some degree. Maybe even beans, too, I forget. Potatoes and onions are also going in just before the last frost date under a nice bit of dirt and mulch.
Heat loving things like peppers and tomatoes do better as transplants in my colder area (zone 5), but in places like southern CA they could probably be direct seeded to some degree.

Radishes, chard, spinach, cucumbers. I always pre-sprout my beans in wet paper towels because I have had some failure from ground pests eating the sprouting beans once. We planted peas, mesclun, radishes, chard and leaf lettuce in my daughter's cold frame two weeks ago, and we have sprouts!!! This weekend I will start on the big garden. I love this time of year!

Everything the pps said, I just had to reply because I am so jealous that you all can put stuff in the ground.
:My kids are home from school yet again due to freezing rain and sleet
: I am beginning to wonder if I will ever see my garden again
I have a bit of cabin fever going on can you tell?
I am hoping to start my Toms, peppers, melons and all the longer stuff by the end of the month. When I do finally see soil...in go the peas, spinach, kohlrabi, carrots, and beans, at least the 1st of some succesive plantings. I am sure there are more but just can't think right now.

corn, okra, melons, and squash all can be direct sown as well. corn, okra, beans, etc. can be sown in rows and then plant melons and squash (except zucchini which can be in a regular row) in mounds or a row of mounds either up a trellis or sprawling on the ground.

If you go to the hardware store or garden store and pore over the seed packets, they all say on the back whether they should be started indoors or direct seeded. Potatoes, peas and greens like it cool!
