Need Family Costume Ideas

Purim is coming up in a couple of weeks, and the kids want to have outstanding, memorable costumes for all 4 of us.

We're throwing some ideas around: cards from a deck of cards, or characters from the Clue game, but any more ideas would be appreciated. I don't want to spend a ton of money on this, but I do know how to sew and we do have some scrap fabric lying around.

Ok, but how would we make those costumes?

DD1 could be Glinda as we have the dress my mom wore to my aunt's wedding (think 80's bridesmaid!) which would work for that. But which characters would the rest of us be? There's the tin MAN, the scarcrow (also a man) the lion (sounds like a complicated costume to make)- Dorothy and the bad witch sound easy enough, but where does DS fit into this?

We're big into family themed costumes here (well, the kids love them...). Usually we use them for both Hallowe'en and Purim. Here are some recent themes:

2007 (and this Purim)--Dr. Seuss
dd1: Maizy the Lazy Bird
dd2: The Cat in the Hat
dp: hunter
me: Horton the Elephant
black pug: Little Cat A
fawn pug: The Elephant Bird

2006--Peter Pan
dd1: Peter Pan
dd2: Tinkerbell
dp: Captain Hook
me: Crocodile
black pug: Smee
fawn pug: Starkey

2005-Little Bo Peep
dd1: sheep
dd2: sheep
dp: sheep
me: sheep
black pug: black sheep
fawn pug: Little Bo Peep

2004-gastric influenza. t shirts, slightly vomit-stained.

2003--Rocky Horror Picture Show (dd1 was 18 months old)
dd1: Columbia (in gold sequinned tail coat size 2T_
dd2: not born yet
dp: Brad
me: Janet
black pug: Riff Raff
fawn pug: Magenta

2002--The Wizard of Oz
dd1: Dorothy (her ruby slippers were sequinned booties)
dd2: not born yet
dp: Scarecrow
me: Wicked Witch of the West
black pug: Tin Man
fawn pug: Cowardly Lion

Ideas being kicked around for this fall include: Mary Poppins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Eloise, Alice in Wonderland...

Not sure if any of that helps.

Could you use a bunch of tin foil for the tin man? Silver face paint?

And for the lion...hmm...

I have no clue where to find silver face paint- nor am I sure I want something like that on my child's skin.

A better question is "who plays which characters and which characters do we just skip?"

The hamster isn't coming to shul with us and doesnt' need a costume.

Our family consists of a 13yo girl, an 11.5yo girl, a 6yo boy, and me. Us girls rarely wear pants (last year DD1 went as a man, and 2 her friends went as a her pregnant wife and their baby, but she wasn't really comfortable wearing pants to shul) so in general we're looking for costumes that either ARE dresses/skirts or can be worn over them.

Our local library does an Oz theme every year and all the characters are "played" by women... scarecrow has raffia sticking out between buttons/ankles/wrists/hat brim, the lion has a yarn mane (loops of yellow and red and brown sewn on elastic) and braided yarn tail with a brown sweat suit body, the tin man has a metal funnel hat (held on with more elastic) a silver foil covered box for the chest and grey sweats under it all. It could probably be done with skirts but you're right... it would be more challenging!

You could go a la Wicked and do Galinda/Glinda, Nessa, and Elphaba for the "girls" and DS could be a flying monkey or Boq or the Doctor or other Wicked character. Or select characters from the other Oz books... there are plenty to choose from.

Rocky horror- brilliant!

Ok, now I think maybe I need to actually READ the books! I've only seen the movie about a hundred times!

I can't read the whole series before we start sewing costumes though. Purim is in about 2.5 weeks and I need to get started sewing ASAP.

I figured not on the face paint, just throwin' it out there.

The ladies could be Dorothy, good witch and bad witch. DS could be whichever else is easiest to make. Maybe?
Your DS could be the wizard! He's supposed to be a little man in an old-fashioned suit with a moustache, so that would be easy enough.

The books are very different from the film... Baum had some odd ideas that don't really fly these days! But there are plenty to choose from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oz_books

Hmmmm.... switching gears from Oz, maybe fruit salad (each person is a different fruit, made from cardboard/fabric)? Or letters that spell a word (each person a letter or group of letters)? Parts of a life cycle (youngest is a seed, then seedling, then sapling, and finally "mature" plant/tree or egg/caterpillar/pupae/butterfly)? A color wheel or rainbow?

Maybe go with inanimate:
  • You a box of crayons, each kid a different color crayon.
  • you a bag of m&ms each kid a different coloc m&m
  • etc
or non oz books
  • kids three musketeers, you the queen or Dartanian
  • you a librarian, kids each characters from different books
from TV
  • kids Chrissy, Janet and Jack, you Mrs Roper
  • News Anchors and a weather man.
Historical themes
  • Everyone a different painter (Picasso, Mary Cassat, Marietta Robusti Tintoretto)
  • Important scientists (Einstein, Curie)
  • American revolutionaries (Molly Pitcher, Betsy Ross)

As I was scrolling up and saw the bump smilie it struck me that you could each be a different smilie.

I'm not sure how well that would work realistically.

Anyway, we've been thinking of ideas for over 3 weeks and have yet to actually sew anything. We still haven't cleared the floor under the sewing machine so one of hte kids can plug it in- I can't bend down to do it myself. I wanted to do some mending and ended up doing it by hand instead.

And, to top it off, I just found out that our shul is having a Purim party this Sunday at 3:00 PM. I thought we had until next Thursday to get the costumes done, but we only have until Sunday! This means we can't buy any materials, or even go to the thrift store for ideas, but have to make due with whatever we already have on hand.

The librarian idea is a good one, then we can be a "theme" with a lot more flexibility to use what we already have in the house. DS can use his old Dalmation costume (if it still fits!) and be one of the 101 Dalmations, or a fire dog, or he can wear the kangaroo costume that was purchased for DD1 when DS was an infant, and he can be Kanga and Roo from Winnie the Pooh or a random kangaroo from a non-fiction book.

And the girls can throw together whatever they want and pick a fictional character that resembles the costume- I've got a Statue of Liberty costume I made for myself in college, along with a Medeival woman costume also from my college days, and there's the dress my mom wore to my aunt's wedding in 1982.

The only thing I'm not sure about is what a librarian is supposed to look like, and how anybody will be able to tell I'm in a costume if I'm just wearing my regular clothes! Plus keep in mind that I cover my hair for religious reasons and I don't own any wigs, so whatever costume I make needs to have a headcovering of some kind. Sweeping my hair up into a tight bun for a "librarian" costume isn't an option, and I generally don't see librarians covering their hair.

Hmmmm... I actually am a librarian but I don't know how much help that will be in terms of creating a "recognize from a distance" librarian outfit!

Cardigan/sweater set? Libraries have funky heating systems and oddly enough twin sets and cardigans are practical library couture.

Glasses on a chain around your neck?

Perhaps a pocket with a "library card" and some book cards poking out? Could you fake a "cancellation stamp" gizmo out of cardboard?

A bag holding a variety of fake books (folded paper) with silly "Librarian" titles? (Librarian's Guide to Gizmos. Dewey: Decimal or Digital? Librarian Avenger! etc)

A name tag saying "Hello My Name is... Shhhhh"?

I have to admit I kind of hate the stereotypical librarian image, but in terms of costuming and having people "get" the family ensemble it's probably the best way to go.

Ok, the twinset won't work because I don't own one that fits me- my wardrobe is rather limited right now as I'm losing weight and I don't want to buy much in this size (and based on the rate I was losing a few months ago, I thought I'd be in smaller sizes by now.) Nor will the glasses around my neck since I already wear glasses. But I could do the fake books and cancellation stamp.

Hmm. Maybe it would be better to have one of the girls be the librarian and I could be Molly Weasley. Or we could all go as Harry Potter characters.

How about dressing like a famous librarian? Could you fake a toga (out of a sheet) over a long shirt, wrap some ribbon/rope/string/yarn around your waist and chest for the decorative bits, and throw a shawl over your hair? You could be Hypatia of Alexandria (cool library chick). Just add some scrolls and you're set.

Or maybe (if you have a sort of period outfit) as Evie from the movie The Mummy? I adore her "I am a LIBRARIAN" line.

On another note... maybe dress like an author (rumpled clothes, crushed pages, pen over ear, note book, signature look if author had one, etc) and the kiddos could be characters from books written by that author? (or combine the two and be L'Engle or Norton )
