Here's how the conversation went:
A man's voice:
him: "Hello and thank you for calling the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention! How may I help you?"
me: "Well, I had a question about formaldehyde."
him: "Uh-huh?"
me: "With all the talk about Formaldehyde levels in FEMA campers recently, I wanted to call and ask if there has ever been studies conducted proving the safety of injectable formaldehyde."
him: "Injectable?"
me: "Yes, as in the formaldehyde in vaccines."
him: "So you want to know if vaccines have formaldehyde..."
me: "No, I know they contain formaldehyde. What I want to know is if it's been proven safe for use in vaccines."
him: "Oh...well let me see..." (click, click, click)
him: "Well it says here that...(reading from the CDC's website)...it is used to inactivate bacterial products...and that it is used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might be found in cultures used to produce vaccines."
me: "Well, I found that on the CDC's website myself. I know why it is put there, but what I want to know is has it been proven safe through any studies..."
him: "Let me look again..." (click, click, click...) "You know why it's there, don't you?"
me: "Well, yes, you just read me..."
him: (cuts me off): "it's to make the vaccines safer."
me: "oh?"
him: "It INACTIVATES viruses." (click, click, click...) "It isn't the same formaldehyde as you're thinking...it's not what is in the FEMA campers."
(I'm speechless...because I'm pretty sure that's completely false)
him: "Ok, I'm going to go ahead and transfer you to someone else who may be able to help you more. Hold for one minute, please."
(a few minutes pass)
a woman's voice:
her: "hello, I understand you have a question about formaldehyde?"
me: "Yes, I've been looking on the internet and I can't seem to find any studies that show formaldehyde use in vaccines is safe."
her: (in a cheery and somewhat boastful tone) "well, I have the CDC database here...let me see..." (click, click, click)
her: "formaldehye is used to inactivate bacterial products..." (she reads the entire paragraph off of the CDC's website)
me: "Well, what I'm looking for is if you can tell me if there have ever been any studies conducted which prove that formaldehyde in vaccines is safe, short and long-term."
her: (in a slightly irritated tone) "well it's used to make the vaccines safer for children. It inactivates the virus."
me: "but are there any studies that you can direct me to confirming the safety?"
her: "just a moment..." (click, click, click...) (a few minutes pass)
her: "I'm not finding a specific study."
me: "Ok...(I feel a little shocked because I had figured she'd at least pull SOMETHING up for me.)
me: "so is the formaldehyde removed before it's injected?"
her: "I'm not sure I understand your question."
me: "Is it added to inactivate the virus, and then removed before being shipped to pediatrician's offices?"
her: "No."
me: "So vaccines actually still contain formaldehyde when injected into children?"
her: "It has to remain there to continue to do it's job of keeping the vaccine safer."
me: "And you can't find a study confirming the safety of formaldehyde in vaccines?"
her: "No. But that doesn't mean it isn't safe."
me: "Could there have been studies conducted but they're just not in the CDC's database?"
her: "I can only tell you what I can find, and I can't find it."
me: "Ok, well thank you for your time."
her: "You're welcome and thanks for calling the CDC."
