GBS Pos, Kinda Bummed Out

I found out today I am GBS posistive. I know it isn't the end of the world, but I am really sad. I have never labored before with children, so it feels like one more thing to complicate things. I know there was a GBS support thread, but I guess it is a few pages back now. Anyway, thanks for listening to me whine My midwife assures me I will still be able to move, but I have to go right to the hospital if my water breaks. I just wanted to labor at home. Well, maybe my water won't break...

That is a bummer. Sorry to hear it. I get my results back on Friday. I am curious to know.

However, my homebirth mw never mentioned to me that I would have to go to the hospital in the case of my water breaking. That is interesting. They made it sound like it wouldn't make too much difference for them either way. I wonder if that is standard.

Here is hoping your waters don't break!

Hey Pumpkin,

I know how you feel, but it's not the end of the world. I personally have had a pretty smoothe pregnancy and am grateful that this is the only complication I have encountered so far.

I was also diagnosed GBS +,which was crushing at first since I am aiming for a natural birth at a hosptial. I have studied the Bradley Method which tells us to labor at home. Well, may not happen, so I put extra energy into my "bag of trix" for L&D.

So, go get yourself a string of xmas lights to put in the L&D room and some good music and go make the best of the situation!!

Your GBS sister,
Becky

I LOVED laboring at home for my son. We went out for breakfast and walked around the neighborhood. We had studied Bradley too. But I have to accpet that no labor is alike and this one could be just as wonderful. I just have to get used to the idea Thanks for the advice!

Sorry for the news, pumpkingirl. I don't remember the exact statistic, but isn't it a fairly small number of pple whose water breaks before active labor? So hopefully the odds are on your side. And as above, it truly is possible to make the hospital labor go less "clinically" than you may imagine. Good luck!

Can't you do the hibeclens wash instead? There is a good chance the antibiotics will give you a serious case of thrush which may or may not be easy to get rid of. I was GBS + with my last baby and got the abx. I wish I hadn't.

Oh Pumpkingirl I feel your pain!

I just found out the same thing at my MW appt. today.

I declined the anitbiotics and plan on hitting up Walgreens tommorow to get the Hibiclens wash.

I'm still able to labor at home my mw just said she would not let me go more than 18 hours after my membranes ruptured.

This will be my 4th birth and my membranes never ruptured early with my other labors so I am just praying this time it will be the same.

I do hate that feeling of being closely watched and that something is/ could be wrong. That's why I've declined all testing until this one. My midwife really talked me into testing for GBS; initially I had said no.

Oh well, at least now I know to do the wash and then I will put it out of my head!

Wishing you an easy, safe labor and birth!

Exactly. I also went to the hospital right after my water broke, and REALLY wish I hadn't.

I would do the hibiclens wash and re-test. In any case, you can try to talk your MW into letting you do hibiclens rather than abx--studies have shown that it's just as effective without any of the nasty side effects.

I am hoping my water won't break until I am way far along I too have the GBS. I am really annoyed, because I wanted to labor at home as long as I could. The problem is my labors are really fast and I don't want to have to be observed for 48 hours..... ARGH!
