Gardening in the Mountians of NC

In the past I have done gardens in the eastern part of the state and when I was kid my dad was farmer. It always seemed like March was the time of the year to get things started.
My question when would be the best time to start my garden in the Mountains. Someone told me that it could be as late as May.

Thoughts..suggestions.

I would call or visit your local Ag. extension office. You could talk to one of thier Master Gardener's as well, they are a wealth of information.

I did some digging around on the net and found out that the first frost free day for the spring in my county is May 12. I am going to have ot hold my horses but the longer dates gives me times to start from seed instead of buying hot house plants.
I usually try to do things by the Almanac dates. My Father was a hardcore almanac farmer and was very well respected for his crop yields.

Thanks for the info about the extension service

Hey Denise!
It's usually here that you should plant by mother's day - that's the easy way to remember. But that's just for Summer stuff.
You can get your Spring stuff in all through March... here's what I have planted right now: some of carrots (these will be planted continuously), lettuce, kale, mustard, peas. Any Spring stuff is good for planting right now!
Have fun!
