Wow. That plain sucks. I am sorry you have to go through this. Is there some medicine or treatment?

We still need an official diagnosis, but the treatment is just dietary (what I'm doing now) and there are some medications to provide itching relief and steroids to help develop baby's lungs so early delivery is safer. Then, at around 34 weeks or so, they'll induce.

They have to induce at 34 weeks?

The problem is that the longer the baby stays in, the more of a chance of toxins getting into his/her system is.

So sorry that you're dealing with this, but it sounds like you have a plan at any rate.

OMG.... I feel terrible for you.....
I can't imagine going through that. Especially having to induce that early-
My thoughts will be with you and your babe, and I hope everything turns out great for the both of you.
Take Care

I couldn't get on MDC at all yesterday so I missed this. It all sounds so scary, Sara.

Other than worried and frustrated, how are you feeling? Has the diet been helping you physically?

Oh. I know nothing about cholestasis. I'm sorry this is happening to you. Be sure to read up on bfing in special situations so you are prepared when he/she comes. (I think it is a she. Do you?)

Well, I'm mostly tired. I sleep pretty much all night (as well as we all sleep at this point ), go to work around 7, get back around 1:30, and then sleep til dinner around 5 or 6. Then I eat something, and go to sleep again usually around 9 or 10. I've canceled my appointments I can get out of for this week so I can rest up and steel myself for whatever treatment lies ahead, but at this point, it feels like I'm barely getting by physically. I'm just so tired.

The diet has been GREAT. It's reduced the attacks I was having constantly to a dull throb. Now, the throb has gotten worse, but I haven't had an attack since going on the diet, which is great.

That's great advice. I have a $25 g/c to Barnes & Noble that's burning a hole in my pocket, so I may get The Motherly Joy of Breastfeeding or something.

And yes, I think it's definitely a she. My mother agreed. "No boy would EVER be this much trouble." Gee, thanks Ma!

I'm glad so far you're feeling better. It's got to be scary to have her so early! In this case I'm glad she's a girl and you can get steroids on board. That should help tremendously.

Have they given you some idea of if this will magically "go away" right after the birth or is there some chance it will linger?

Hi, mamas. You haven't seen me since yesterday because yesterday night I was checked into the emergency room by my family doctor and my midwife (they ganged up on me!).

This turned out to be the best visit to the emergency room I've ever had.

I don't have cholestasis! It's definitive! I have what the ER doctor said was the worst case of gastritis he's ever seen without a perforation of the stomach lining. It's so bad that it bruised one of my ribs, which was causing the horrible pain.

We did an ultrasound of my liver, spleen, stomach, gallbladder, and kidneys, and found a polyp on my gallbladder, which he said could have contributed to the low LFT. My gallbladder IS functioning, though, as is my liver. They're just stressed out because of all the inflammation in my upper abdomen.

So he gave me orders to take Pepcid AC (he said it's safe, my research is telling me it's untested) and cut out acidic foods. I'm really happy that my dreams of a natural birth and a healthy baby are still within reach. Thank you for all the wonderful thoughts of encouragement and prayers. I don't know how I would have got through this without my May mommas.

Oh, and now some fun mainstream medical stories!

Doctor: Who is taking care of your ob/gyn care?
Me: Birth Care Family Midwives
Doctor: No, I mean who will be delivering your baby?
Me: The head of the practice is Maribeth Diver, CNM, but I'm hoping my husband!
Doctor: (giving me "the look") Uh huh. I mean, what hospital will you go to?
Me: Hopefully none! (after another "look") I'll be at the birth center.
Doctor: (rolls his eyes) Ok.

Doctor: How have your ultrasounds looked?
Me: I haven't had any.
Doctor: No, of the baby.
Me: I haven't had any.
Doctor: Why??
Me: Why would I? There was no reason to.
Doctor: ("the look")

Thanks again, ladies.

yaaay!!!

on the other hand, ouch!! Having had an ulcer just prior to this PG and severe gastritis thanks to some antibiotics in January, you have my sincerest sympathies! That is some AWFUL pain!! FWIW, I'm on zantac 150 twice a day and nexium as needed. It's either that or literally screaming pain.

YAAAAAY!!!!! :

Not that I'm happy about your gastritis, but this is still GREAT news!!! I'm so happy for you mama .

And thanks for the transcripts ... I got a good chuckle out of those .

Love your conversation with the doctor .

And so glad you got good news from the ER visit! Sounds horrible and painful still-- but so much better than you'd thought. That's insane that the gastritis bruised your rib. Yikes.

I hope they get you going on a treatment that works for you. Hooray for good news!
