How many seeds can be planted in an 8-inch pot?

Hi there! I'm a first-timer to this forum, and to gardening in general, too.

A few weeks ago, I planted some cucumber, tomato, bell pepper and lettuce, and now they're sprouting up like mad. But I planted more than one seed in a pot (each pot being eight inches deep), so now I've got at least five cucumber plants growing in the same container-- and same for the other veggie plants. They're going to get really crowded soon, and I know I should probably transplant.

My question is, do I need to make it a "one plant to a pot" ratio, or can I squeeze in two or three in the same pot?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi beccalou79,

I would only do one plant per pot. You'll just need to sacrafice some to the garden gods or transplant the others. This way the one plant will get all the nutrients it needs and you won't have as many pest problems. Oh, and plant a radish at the base of your cucumber. It will keep the striped cucumber beetle away.

You can have 2 lettuces in one of those pots. I don't know about cukes - do you have the seed packet they came in? It should tell you the final thinning. THe tomatoes and peppers will need their own pots.
