It makes me sick.

Oh, Boo. That's so sad. Can I ask how old was considered "extended breastfeeding"? I mean, were they freaking out over a 15m old or over a 4yo? (not that it should matter; i nurse my nearly 3yo many, many times a day and think it's perfectly normal! but if they're upset over BABIES nursing, we have A LOT of work to do yet...)

She had her 22mo DD with her! She's not even 2 yet! It was crazy. She's so upset and embarrassed that she believed it would be positive. I feel so bad for her. Apparently the other woman who was on the show that day was a woman from GB that is known around the world for bfing an 8yo. I don't remember her name. But of course they attacked her horribly too.

Yeah this makes me nuts. I have had extended pain every single time, even after I darn well knew how to breastfeed (I am expecting #6 any day now and have nursed twins as well). Some women have pain from problems, some women have pain cause it just takes a longer time to adjust. The pain has gotten to about 2-3 weeks per baby now, but my first set of twins it lasted two months. I think it is reasonable to think that my poor nipples, while being used correctly were just simply being USED A LOT! Hence the extended soreness. The only reason I stuck it out was I was too poor for formula for two and two proud to take WIC (not that I think others shouldn't use it if they need it). I wish someone had told me that some women just take longer to get to a point of comfort.

Send your friend and : from us! How sad! What a strange message to send to your viewing public: Give them breastfeeding support, but treat them like freaks if they do it for a minute longer than you think they're supposed to.
I wonder if Tyra is aware of the WHO's breastfeeding recommendations. :

Sorry to bump a sort of old thread but you can watch the entire episode here. Just click on the other parts off to the right.

I have to warn you though that the first part is pretty graphic when the women talk about their PPD. Graphic in the sense that they fantasize about harming their children and they describe it in detail. It was pretty sad to watch.

ETA: In part 5 (I think it's part 5 anyway) Tyra calls on a woman in the audience who has a "tip" for breastfeeding and she basically says that nipple shields were invented for women who "have a hard time breastfeeding" or something and pretty much just advocates them being given out like candy. Errr I think most women have a hard time in the beginning and the majority of the women can breastfeed without the shields. Ah well.

I know I have come to find that most mainstream reality shows are not really genuine but the more controversy and people look like a**es the higher the ratings. I am sorry your friend got sucked in.
