elastic on Motherease diaps

Does anyone know what type of elastic is around the edges of the one-size Motherease diapers? I had a set with my first two children and loved them, but now they are worn out and I want to attempt to make some of my own. However, I don't have a serger and thought that the elastic would make a good alternative edging for stretchy fabrics (like recycled t-shirts). I just don't know enough about sewing to know what to call the elastic around the edge. Their web site calls it "rib knit binding" - is that something I can ask for at the fabric store? It's very soft, not quite like a regular fold-over elastic.

I'd love to hear comments on the idea of making diapers with this type of procedure. I'm thinking of getting a snap press, because that was one of the reasons I loved the motherease so much: I don't like velcro.

MotherEase uses lastin as the elastic, then covers it with cotton rib knit binding. I have heard that the fern and faerie pattern (the pay one, not the free one) uses recycled t shirts and also binds similar to motherease, that's probably a good place to start
