to give/or not give eye drops/ointment????

Do any of the midwives believe there is ever a time to give the antiobiotics eye drops besides the presence of std?
what about bacterial infections/yeast infections?
Also GBS if found in urine would you reccommned antibiotics during labor if test came back false at 37 weeks and would that also be a extra reaon to give eye drops?

Yes, there is a time to give antibacterial eye treatment to newborns---as soon as they start manifesting signs of eye infection.

GBS bacteriuria in early pregnancy implies heavy colonization and is considered high risk for early-onset sepsis. A negative later in pregnancy is unusual because providers don't generally rescreen after a urine positive.

Strep, staph, E coli and S. pneumoniae are possible non-STI causes of opthalmia neonatorum. It's very rare in this country. There are several studies showing no difference in rates of infection with erythromycin ointment, diluted betadine and plain water.
