How would you pronounce this name?

My FIL was named Dmitry and he passed away a year ago. My DH told his family I was pg. on the anniversary of his death, so of course everyone is saying it would be nice to name the child after FIL.

The name Demi has started to grow on me a little already b/c it would have extra meaning, but the fact that it automatically makes you think of Demi Moore and that people don't know how to pronounce it makes me think twice.

So how would you pronounce it? If you have a name or named your child something that can be pronounced in more than one way did this become annoying? My name is Kim and my dh is George so there isn't much wiggle room in how you pronounce our names!

I'd pronounce it Duh-MEE, but since demi is actually a word pronounced DEH-me, you're going to get a lot of that too. I wouldn't name the kiddo Demi unless you're okay with either/or pronounciation - there's no around it in this case.

I think it's a lovely name, by the way - for a boy OR a girl!!

If you don't mind funky spellings and really want it to be pronounced like Dmitry, you could fiddle around with an apostrophe. D'emi, or D'mi, or D'mee.

Actually, I kind of like D'emi.

Oh, apostrophes are way too fancy for us, we're simple folk! My husband is Russian and I'm German/Polish so it wouldn't really fit for us, but it sure would help with pronunciation.

I guess her close friends and family would say it the right way and the other way isn't totally obnoxious. I wouldn't be annoyed, but I don't want my child to get annoyed with her name, you know what I mean? I just saw that it was in the top 100 in the UK in 2006 so it's not too uncommon.

I have some time to figure it out!

That's what's funny about it b/c I think alot of people say Demi Moore's name like they would a demi bra, but it's actually de MEE, short for Demetria.

I would say it like De-MI, like Demi Moore. I guess I would think it a bit unusual for a boy's name. But I think Dmitry is a neat name. Would you name him that and just call him Demi? Or would Demi be his given name?

I really like Dmitry for a boy. If you call a child Demi people are going to assume you named her for the actor I think. I've never heard of another.

It would definitely be a girl's name and not a boy. We wouldn't call the boy Dmitry, probably just use it as a middle name. His nickname (FIL) was Dima. The name Demi is popular outside of the U.S. and not related to Demi Moore, but I know that is the first reaction to the name. Seriously, the more I think about the name the more complicated it is for such a simple name!

The only Demi I know is Greek and he pronounces it Dem ee.
