I stood up for my daughter..and it feels GREAT!!

I brought Reagan in for blood work today at the Urgent Care Med Lab. I called ahead to be sure I could breastfeed during the needle. It was a main center I called because they don't accept calls at individual places. When I got there I told them that I was the one that called. She said..Who said you could breastfeed? The other receptionist then says.."Your baby could choke! We don't do that here." I said I drove 40 min to be told no? She then said, "You would rather your baby choke?" I said yes. I didn't want to say what I really wanted to say because I still wanted them to do it. She then gives me this disgusted look and rolls her eyes like I am the worst mother on the planet. She says.."Well it is up to the person drawing the blood."
I get into the rm and tell them I may have to go elsewhere because I AM breastfeeding while she got the needle. I said I don't want to have to go all over Windsor looking for someone to do it. They said..well she has to be facing a certain way and it will be too hard. I told them I will lean over her if I have to. I will do whatever I can. They didn't seem too impressed but allowed it. SHE DIDN'T CHOKE!! Can you believe it?? I was shocked that they didn't have to run in and resuscitate her from the choking I would have caused her rolleyes.gif
She wimpered a bit when the needle went in and that was it. I am so happy I stood up for my daughter!

It is a load of horse pukey - that you'd choke on a breast!?!

Good for you. There are some people around who need to take a biology course....or at least look at a book to see how the breast works. Choking on a breast.

Yay for you!!!!

Choke, wth? That was the reason they said they didn't want you to?

lmao!...were they serious?
I would have laughed at them and said 'what is my nipple going to fall off? - Is she going to choke on my nipple?!'.... (and the word nipple is usually enough to fluff up other peoples feathers lol)

Good job though hun!

yeah! I nursed DS for his PKU @ 1 week old, he never even reacted. I also nursed for a blood draw in the hosp when he had RSV. He never choked...lol. And no one ever questioned either.

Awesome!

That's just crazy about the choking! I'm guessing that they're equating bf'ing with bottle/cup feeding, but even then, I can't imagine how drinking something while having blood drawn would cause her to choke.

Good for you, mama!

Good for you! I believe it was been demonstrated in certain studies (I could be wrong here) that breastfeeding during certain painful procedures such as a blood draw makes it less traumatic for the child.

My thoughts exactly. WTH?

I think the assumption is that if the baby is in the process of swallowing milk, they might gasp & inhale when the needle goes in and choke on the milk.

I also nursed my dd through blood draws and ignored the repeated warnings. She never had any trouble with choking.

I think that it is just thinly-veiled discomfort with a nursing mother. sad.

contrast it to my little rural health clinic. There the nurse always suggests I nurse when the girls get shots! Even now that gingy is a toddler, she suggests it.

I am so glad you stood up for your family. can be hard, right?

But even so, inhaling a little breastmilk is no biggie.

I wish more people would understand this

Well, since you were in a medical facility, hopefully they could have "saved" her if she did choke. :
