Powdered milk? Really cheaper? - Page 2

For regular milk its not cheaper for us, but kiddo drinks goats milk and I can get powdered half price of fresh off amazon.

DH and I just had this conversation. Apparently he had powered milk as a kid. I never had it, but I hear it tastes kind of yucky. Then again, I've had raw milk (milked the cow myself, skimmed of the cream and put in the fridge kind of milk) and I thought that was NASTY!!! Milk here is about 3.79 a gallon, so from the sounds of it, I guess it would be a bit cheaper for us. Considering we only go through 2 gallons a week, I'd rather try to find $2 or so from somewhere else.

We keep it around for baking and emergencies. Milk is 2.88 a gallon here which is still cheaper than powdered around here.

According to the Tightwad Gazzette books, powdered milk prices lag about a year behind fresh milk prices. So whether it is cheaper at any given time varies. You have to calculate the reconstituted price. And prices for powdered milk vary quite a bit between stores. The best price where I live is at Aldi at $12.99 for a box that makes 5 gallons. Walmart is way more expensive. So that's $2.60 a gallon. I can usually get fresh milk on sale for $2.67-2.99. So not really worth it right now, especially when you factor in health concerns.

I've never found it to be cheaper. We use 2% for everything.

I think I've convinced dh to use up my powdered milk in his tea. (Instead of using 1/2 and 1/2 or whole milk.) I mixed some up 2x strength and he liked it. Sticking with fresh for the kids!

This is exactly why I purchase goat milk in the powdered form. It's the only kind of milk I can tolerate, but I don't drink much milk because of the carb content. Buying the powdered milk means I can have half a cup of milk per week and it won't spoil before I use up the package. The goat milk costs EXACTLY the same thing per reconstituted quart whether I buy it ultra-pasturized, canned, or powdered (Meyenberg Farm brand.)

When I was drinking a lot of goat milk, I would buy it fresh (regular pasturized, not UHT) from a local HFS for slightly less than the price of the Meyenberg stuff.

I buy whole cow's milk (pasturized, not UHP) for the kids. It's far cheaper than the goat milk and they prefer the taste of the cow milk.

For us it costs about $1 per litre less to use powdered milk but no one will drink it. So we buy milk and use powdered milk for baking/cooking when you don't actually taste the milk.
