Mama cloth for Africa--hallelujah!

Y'know those commercials on TV (for those who watch ) for a disposable pad company which will not be named that shows a girl in Africa who has to stay home from school during her period *until* the wonderful disposable pad company donates some pads to her? Yeah, I grumble at those every time they come on--what happens when they stop donating pads to her and she doesn't have the money to buy them? What do women in her village normally do? Do they really need more plastic trash in their lives? (It kind of reminds me of baby formula give-aways in developing nations . . . . )

Anyway, I just got an email from Lunapads, and they are selling a package of cloth pads and liners to be donated to African girls and women! Yay!

What a wonderful idea! There is a WAHM on Hyenacart doing this as well

I was less than thrilled when I saw those commercials Cloth is a much better alternative IMO.

That's wonderful! I'm so glad I wonder if Diva Cup or Keeper or another reusable cup company will get on the bandwagon too. I would deffinitly support that!

I found that there's a website called Goods4girls.org that lists all the companies/WAHMs who are participating so you can click on a link and support them. Earlier today, I ordered some from a WAHM who's participating.

But, do they have enough water to wash the pads?

Goods 4 Girls specifies that the pads are given to women and girls in villages where there is enough water for washing.

From talking to a former peace corp worker, the women she worked with traditionally used cloth rags that tied to a belt that went around the waist. So I think that cloth pads would be well accepted.

Ooh, how would I go about getting involved? I sew and sell cloth pads (not on Hyena Cart, though) and would love to donate some. Is there a particular group that these WAHMs are sending theirs to to be distributed? My sewing machine is currently at the repair shop, but as soon as I get it back I'd love to participate!

I'm wondering if underwear need to be donated as well? I can't imagine that many of these women have underwear that would hold the pads in place? Maybe I'm wrong.
