True story based on actual events.
Sunday morning before church, DS#1 (9 yo) seemed sick. Said he was okay to go to church, but by the time we got home felt really bad. Tried to eat brunch, threw up, slept all afternoon, threw up more, was sick a little bit Monday, but fine by Monday evening. 24-hour thing. No big deal. I continue to bottlefeed/pump (same as always)
Monday mid-night, DD#2 (almost 3 yo) wakes up and has threw up all over her bed. DH and I start feeling queasy as well.
All day Tuesday, DH and I and 3 yo are sick as dogs - fever, stuff coming out both ends...not pretty. Even though I felt like cr@p, I still pumped. I'd lay on the couch and pump in my sleep.
Wednesday everyone seems okay except that late Wednesday afternoon, DD#1 (8 yo) gets it. Keep pumping.
Thursday, DS#1 seems sick AGAIN only this time it's different - it's just a a high fever and nothing else (a bit of a runny nose, but nothing significant). I keep pumping, but because of the dehydration, I've gone from pumping 8 oz. per day to only 1-2 oz. per day. I just keep getting this breastmilk into the baby.
Friday morning everyone is better except for DS#1 - still running a high fever. I start using SNS for feedings (even though it's difficult b/c of tongue tie and lip tie), but I've got to do something to get my supply back. It's taken a horrible hit.
Friday afternoon I decide DS#1 is too sick and take him to the doctor. It's confirmed that he has the influenza virus and the whole family starts on Tamiflu except for the baby, he's too young to take Tamiflu.
I ask the doctor what's best for the baby. Doctor says, "breastmilk."
Through this whole crazy week. The only who hasn't gotten sick is the baby. I credit that to breastmilk. So the next time someone tells you that they are pumping and can only get 1-2 oz. a day and is it worth it....the answer is YES!!!!!
My supply is finally coming back up. I've been SNS'ing and pumping today (he's not thrilled with the SNS, but I'll let him have his bottles back next week sometime). So far today I've pumped 6 oz.. Things will hopefully get better from here.
