Parental Rights: Homeschooling Shut Down in California

Perhaps you've heard. An individual court case in CA has led several judges to make a sweeping decision to ban homeschooling statewide unless parents are certified. Millions of kids in the U.S. are home educated by parents without any state certification. These kids are accepted into many colleges and universities and often recruited. They are well adjusted socially and productive members of our soceity. While this may be a home school issue on the surface, and many of you do not home school, parental rights are at the heart. Please take some time to look into this and even sign the petition at www.hslda.org, which is an effort to limit CA's decision to the family in question and not the whole state. More information can be obtained through Home School Legal Defense Association's site.

It's quick and easy to sign this petition. Please check it out. www.hslda.org

I have, but I'm not too worried. This case spoke to the Lang children in particular, whose parents had physically abused them over 25 years, numerous times. The parents were ordered to enroll their kids in school so that mandated reporters could keep their eyes out for abuse. They chose to defy the order.

The ruling is likely to be overturned. It was overzealous, to be sure, but it was meant to apply to one particular case of abuse and neglect, not a sweeping condemnation of every homeschooler in CA.

I heard that the governator is going to introduce legislation to clarify the issue to allow parents to homeschool as long as their children meet the standards....

The homeschool support groups of California have not requested the HSLDA petition.

Here are links to the actual court case http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/B192878.PDF and the California homeschool support resources, for folks who prefer information directly.
